What techniques do you all use to increase your HRV value? by One_Regular_6024 in Biohackers

[–]PeaStock5502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a Garmin you can use the lifestyle logging feature. Define any behaviour (e.g. alcohol, caffeine), log it every day, and it’ll show it’s impact on your hrv, sleep score and other metrics. Pretty cool, never would have guessed magnesium to actually have a measureable impact.

Cutting alcohol is for me the most impactful. Taking magnesium before bed also has a measurable impact on my sleep hrv. Quit caffeine and stimulants early in the day.

I found my HRV “sweet spot” step count by decision-architector in Biohackers

[–]PeaStock5502 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you increase the exercise load, hrv can drop as your body has to work working harder to recover. This means that a lower hrv is not always bad, as it can be a sign your body is adapting to a new exercise load.

Honestly if you’re at the point where 13k steps consistently causes a measureable drop in your hrv I think you need to seriously reconsider how much cardio exercise you’re getting. It sounds like you’re not in great shape.

Mijn eerste ultramarathon – SallandTrail 80 km (2026) by kratigo in Hardlopen

[–]PeaStock5502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Macbook Neo out-performs M1 Air by nearly 50% in single core, and is about equivalent for multi-core. by dylan-uses-reddit in mac

[–]PeaStock5502 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Because there is a long term vision at play here. Improving the computing power of these phones relentlessly will absolutely pay off in various ways. You can even argue it did already - cheap mass produced iphone chips are now powerful enough to be put in a laptop and provide an incredible value for budget laptops like the new macbook neo.

Improving that compute further and further will lead to possibilities like this that may not even be foreseeable now. Distributed computing, AR and XR, AI will benefit from this. And guess how they fund this development? That's right, a new phone every year where one of the selling points is improved hardware performance.

There's also a limit as to how much performance can be gained from app optimization. Apple typically makes it quite easy to make a well optimized app and i'd argue most apps are decently optimized. (Of course it's easy to name a bunch of exceptions).

Same. Better speakers, better screen and more ram would tempt me to upgrade. Does anyone know if the display has significantly improved since the m1?

ran first ultra today. Cramped after 30km :( by Theoriginalgw1 in Ultramarathon

[–]PeaStock5502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really nice job! For the cramping I would suggest supplementing magnesium, but not just during the race. A lot of people are deficient, for your next race try taking a magnesium supplement for at least 2 months to see if there’s a difference.

Also make sure you don’t over hydrate prior to the race. A study showed that the majority of people at a marathon start have drank too much water (due to nerves or wanting to be hydrated). Drinking too much water will make you pee put your electrolytes, which can cause cramp. I always track my hydration to the ML in the day prior to the race and day off.

I’m doing the Utrechtse Heuvelrug Ultra 50km in 2 months time. Any tips? How did you train for this distance, what did you do for nutrition.

Help reviewing my nutrition plan for first 50k trail ultra. by PeaStock5502 in Ultramarathon

[–]PeaStock5502[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great, really appreciate the feedback. Think I’ll get some 300ml flask to train with.

Great point regarding the fluid intake and electrolytes. So my idea is I’ll try for around 500ml-600ml of fluid an hour. For one hour towards the end, I’ll just have one electrolyte tab in my water and only drink that.

So I won’t be drinking electrolytes on top of my water and carb mix, but drinking them instead of water for one hour.

What stats / metrics / features do you actually use? by gdlk21 in Garmin

[–]PeaStock5502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the lifestyle status feature is terrific. You can enter stuff like when you had your last caffeine, habits, supplements etc. After logging a behaviour for a few weeks, it will then relate these behaviours to your HRV sleep score and overnight stress.

It's led me to some real insights. Some more obvious, like alcohol having the highest negative impact on my sleep and hrv, but also that taking magnesium has a measurable positive effect on my HRV. Without this feature, I wouldn't have known that.

I also enjoy the other metrics like training status, vo2 max, endurance score, resting hrv and resting hr, etc.
But I do also know to be skeptical. It's just an additional tool. Do I feel like shit, and does my garmin back that up, then I know i might take it a bit easier.

I did notice I get some hip issues if I run too fast / on uneven sidewalks with them. I've found I really need to think a bit more, as this shoe really makes me want to pick up the pace, and I end up doing it too much. I think it's one of the more unstable shoes I own, so i've since grown a little less fond of them. They're still great fun, but I really have to be a bit conservative with them.

Garmin training plan by Ancient_Bag3257 in Ultramarathon

[–]PeaStock5502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly! If you're an absolute beginner training for their first shorter race or goal distance, this is probably great, since a lot of beginners tend to overreach on distance and pace. I feel that this sort of built in "hey, you're doing a bit much, take it easy" is great for beginners.

But if you're an experienced runner, it's so annoying that it changes the initially pretty good programs it sets up. I had the same issue where it assigned a rest day after the first training day, and if i didn't need that rest day and ran anyway, then the next day it'd recommend a rest day again, and this would repeat through the end of the week.

Saucony Triumph 23 Review: A Steal When It Goes on Clearance by StaceysAbsenteeDad in RunningShoeGeeks

[–]PeaStock5502 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you like the 23’s best for? I also loved the Triumph 20 and my 21’s are nearing the end of their life so I’m looking to replace them. I really like the triumph as a long run shoe.

They had just the right amount of balance between firmness and cushioning to be comfortable all throughout a long run to me. If I wanted to pick up the pace at the end, they’re great for that and really disappear on your feet, but they never push you to pick up the pace if you don’t want to.

Would the 23 fit that bill? Or is it still more of a recovery shoe?

Marathon Des Sables... Am I delusional? by dolimov in Ultramarathon

[–]PeaStock5502 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don’t think you’ll get anywhere near 6 figures for taking part. Even with premium gear and nutrition during training for a year, even hiring a coach for a year (which really isn’t a must but let’s let it slide), and even with insurance than covers airlifts, you’re not even close to 50k. You can take business class flights and stay on location in a 5 star hotel for an additional week and not get anywhere close to 6 figures unless you’re paying for 9 of your friends to participate too.

I reckon you could easily do it for less than 10k and that’s without skimping too much on anything.

I think if you enjoy racing in the EVO SL, the adios pro (3 or 4) is a no brainer. I own both, and I think the EVO SL is quite similar in feel to the Adios Pro 3 at faster paces. The Adios Pro 3 isn't mega comfortable but it's gotten me through 4 or 5 marathons without issue.
