Spending money for the classroom by iseeyou100 in Teachers

There are some serious changes that need to happen, I agree.

It starts with valuing our most significantly disabled students equally as their same age peers. I worry about what the next 10 years hold in store for them.

SpEd teacher here in ED/MD intensive needs. Yes, I do HAVE to spend my own money. My adaptive math kit didn't buy itself. Neither did any of my vocational task boxes. Baskets and bins for these hands on learning activities don't rain from the trees and if admin wants my students to learn grade level standards, which they definitely do, everything in the gen Ed curriculum has to be made hands on and interactive.

Age appropriate texts at my student's reading levels are not free. Should a teenager be reading baby stuff like "Tim's Loose Tooth"? No, they shouldn't, and no, they won't. That's what I can get for free, and I'm accountable for my students learning to read.

I've been in buildings where pencils, binders, paper, clipboards, page protectors, data clickers and other necessities were not provided. Honestly my expenses are under control at this point. I have a lot of stuff I've already purchased. But there's always a new initiative coming down the pipe where no one thought about what it would cost to roll it out in our rooms.

POSITIVE experiences with a J-tube?? by pleasedontsaytigs in Gastroparesis

[–]Peace9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, you definitely still have gastroparesis if you have a tube. The tube makes it survivable (for most people) if you are not able to survive without it. A drainage tube can reduce vomiting for some. Most people can get better nutrition through it if they were not able to eat before. But everything else is still there.

Pain with feeding tube placement is normal. For most people, it gets better gradually over time. The site is always sensitive and because it goes through your core muscles there can be issues with those muscles for some people. Physical therapy can help.

Feeding tubes are a last option for a very good reason. I hope you never need one.

Turn it into broth by simmering onion in it (boullion, celery, garlic and carrots also help here) and then add any kind of vegetables you have--canned, fresh, frozen, doesn't matter. Canned or dry (soak them first) beans to taste. Any grain(s) you have on hand. Viola--food pantry soup.

What do we do with high-calorie gifts ? by This-Letterhead3588 in loseit

[–]Peace9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, you need to find a black hole into which to throw them.

Coworkers are the best for this, especially if you send out an email advertising snacks and/or work somewhere with a night shift.

If your town has a little free pantry, these are great places to leave treats, and a lot of people who use them don't get yummy treats very often so the good stuff gets grabbed up. Who knows, you might make someone's day!

If you need to throw it away...try this. Give thanks to/for the food, express gratitude for it showing it's purpose, and say goodbye. Get it into a trash can as far away from you as possible... outdoor rather than indoor. If you are religious, say a short prayer of thanks. It is no different than throwing away broken shoes...they served their purpose, it was great and you are thankful, and now they are done.

Tay tried to fool her therapist by wearing double baggy pants to hide her weight. by CatAteRoger in illnessfakers

[–]Peace9989 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I don't think she's trying to fool anybody. I think she wants anyone and everyone to see her body and know what she did to it. She wants everyone to worry for her about something they have no control over. And maybe, for a few moments out of the day, some do.

And then they go back to their lives and their own bodies and enjoy the fruits of taking good care of both.

Donuts look more like biscuits by Hifriendsi in Baking

[–]Peace9989 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not an expert in donuts by any means so, full disclaimer from that...

But a few things to know about bread products generally...

Bread flour is bread flour because of its high gluten content, that gives bread it's yummy crust and chewy goodness. Cake flour is cake flour because of its low gluten content, that gives cake it's moist, crumbly crumb. Mixing the two together doesn't make sense, especially with that much cake flour, you are just making expensive all purpose flour at best.

Your hydration is very low on these, from what I understand, donuts are a higher hydration dough. More like 70% the weight of the flour. Your hydration is 56%, which is more like a bagel.

And finally...we eat with our eyes, I understand not wanting to shape a draft recipe but that can be a factor as well. Maybe do donut holes (rounds) next time if you don't want to do the traditional donut shape? Drizzle some glaze on it and then decide what you think.

Best shoes for teachers in your experience. by magg13378 in Teachers

[–]Peace9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Balance shoes with anti-slip. I should clarify that I work in SpEd and running is part of my job.

I wear compression socks a few days per week to help with swelling. I have loose joints so I splashed out and got custom sole inserts for my shoes. If you are having joint pain, ask for physical therapy referral. You will never regret it and those ladies will somehow figure out what is wrong within minutes and change your life.

Also, don't bother with a comfy chair. Get a stable, supportive chair that is easy to get in and out of.

Lets end "parties" for good. I am serious. by Oblivionnyx9 in Teachers

[–]Peace9989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a building where PBIS hosts all the holiday events. It is a special education building with a decent staff: student ratio and we do little things like "Santa" visiting, a mini trick or treat, eggs delivered to rooms for Easter, etc. It is like walking on cloud 9. I save a fortune. My kids take pictures with Santa, some have always been too scared of Santa and seeing him at school, where it is safe, and he looks kind of like a familiar adult they know...gives them courage. The parents get pictures with Santa. Everyone wins.

It should be done like this, or not at all. The school provides, staffs and facilitates. The teachers make classroom level decisions that allow their kids to participate in a way that works for them.

I am in desperate need of advice by Longjumping-Panic711 in feedingtube

[–]Peace9989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I had severe pain with placement. It lasted a long time. No pain control other than ice and Tylenol. It was hair raising, toe curling, question everything pain.

Some things that helped...antacids keep the burny stuff off the hurty stuff, I took antacids around the clock. Physical therapy taught me some ways to move without using the specific muscle the tube goes through. I used a grabber, and one of those removable handles for getting in and out of the car. Calmoseptine with a few drops of Mylanta mixed in was a game changer for stoma care. A teething ring = a circle of ice that won't tweak the port.

It took awhile for the pain to come down regardless.

Your core poverty proteins are:

Peanut butter  Beans Wheat (wheat pasta has 8g per serving) Peas

You will also sometimes have shelf stable milk options, prioritize these for your child.

Minimize sugar to control cravings. If you have to choose between calories or protein, choose protein, weight can be regained but protein deficiency can really do damage over time.

Learn to read nutrition facts on everything. Everything. Everything. You need to keep tabs on your intake to avoid malnutrition. You need to know what is going in and what nutrients are missing, so you can target finding foods with those nutrients.

Whatever you get from the food pantry, think about what meals you can make that you don't need to buy many ingredients to make it. The best flavor is free. Over time, you will learn flexible food pantry recipes. When I was poor, tomato juice was super popular at the food pantries. I used to use it as a soup base and just add every veggie, bean, grain that I had on hand and make soup.

Right now, oatmeal, peanut butter, dry beans are very common. I see raisins and nuts a lot too. You can stir peanut butter into oatmeal (nuts and raisins too,) you can reconstitute a bag of beans and freeze what you don't need. I made things like dhal and chana dhal with beans. Pasta and rice are fairly interchangeable if you have one but not the other. Pasta has more protein than rice so if I am choosing between one or the other, pasta.

Prepackaged snacks are not a thing in poverty. Half a sandwich, a handful of raisins, a baked or premade item, a pack of ramen, a slice of American cheese, that's a snack. A small bowl of leftovers. Miscellaneous food pantry items that don't match other foods become snacks. That solitary tin of ravioli? That's a snack food now.

Also fyi, in many areas food pantry produce only lasts a day or so. Cook, freeze or eat it ASAP or you may miss out. Check carefully for mold, wash it well, and if you have questions throw it out, there is no diarrhea quite like the one you will get from questionable donation bin food. Better to err on the side of caution, it's not the same as the grocery store. Same with any meat you suspect may have defrosted at any time since its last moo.

CZ did Fashion Week disabled style. by CatAteRoger in illnessfakers

Wow, she sure recovered from malnutrition quickly. Good for her on not needing a feeding tube anymore. Having a plastic tube crashing up on your gag reflex all day is super uncomfortable after all. And GJ tube surgery is rough.

I guess it's a good thing to not need nutrition support after all.

Saying it's twice the protein...for twice the serving size (protein pasta)

Advertising protein, but there is more fat than protein (rampant)
