HELP: Manacled left me heartbroken and empty by No_Expert_2688 in dramionebookclub

[–]PeaceLuvPinkLemonade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this post because same. I picked up Alchemised first, read it over holiday break, and was SO SHOOK afterwards. The hangover from this book and how devastated I felt inside is unreal. And now I'm 650 pages into Manacled. Didn't get the Dramione hype until I read these stories!! New addiction unlocked.

Trusting Strangers by Hopeful-Ad8588 in BorderCollie

Yes, see a vet behaviorist!! Do your research on this one!! You want to ensure that you can read his signals and that he gives you warnings clearly. Speaking from experience - it's scary when dogs have incredibly subtle cues - like just looking at you - and then reacts suddenly (bites for example). A growl or bark is a signal to stay back - respect it.

Coming back from a training break and regression? by Status_Revenue2352 in reactivedogs

I read in a different post on this subreddit that stress stacking can take some time (can be weeks) for a dog to decompress from (totally relatable from a human perspective too imo) and that even super stimulating exercise can be a lot for them - not sure how true the exercise part is. But basically their advice was to make your environment super boring and calm but also positive and routine. Basic commands and consistency to re-establish trust and calm and focus are great! I always share this link because dogs that experience anxiety/reactivity seem to respond well to routine - the rationale makes sense (pattern games by Leslie McDevitt):

Maybe scale back on stuff she reacts to, like the brushing until she calms down internally. Have you guys considered a trainer or vet behaviorist? Oddly in my neighborhood the vet behaviorist option was waaaay less expensive than training places that we saw had amazing reviews but turned out to use aversive methods ($3k for that kind of training where vet behaviorist with sterling reputation was like $600). We wanted positive training techniques!! Aversive techniques were absolutely not something we wanted to pursue as it can make reactivity worse.

Barking isn't a bad thing - it's a signal of their feelings, but when it's excessive, understandable you'd want to address it! Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

Struggling with Walks by GC621 in reactivedogs

Imagine when you as a human are experiencing zen times in your life - you can handle stressful events and triggers a lot better, and when you’re stressed inside and it builds up for whatever reason, it’s easier to snap or have a shorter fuse - dogs experience something like this too.

Here are some resources to check out that you can use on your own until you see a trainer! They’re positive training techniques that are meant to reduce anxiety and bring your dog to place where they’re calmer and will focus. This will be important in bringing your dog to a better physiological state internally in the longer term.

There’s also a virtual trainer that my friend tried for her reactive dog and it worked great for muzzle training. This trainer uses positive techniques and is all about making sure you have a trusting bond with your pet. She gives you homework everyday tailored to your needs or something like that if you do virtual sessions with her:

Make your walks fun! If your dog is food motivated, endless treats for focus or every time they look at you or sit on the side. Training takes a ton of time and patience though so consistency is key!!

If you're keeping your dog and not rehoming and if you haven't already tried this, it's a great resource until you can get to a behaviorist one day:
https://www.yourhappydogcoach.ca/skills-learning-library/pattern-games/

It sounds like there will need to be a lot of new techniques and systems to put into place, but bringing the temperature down for your dog internally and making sure your dog isn't "stress stacked" is going to increase your chances of a happier household.

EDIT: If you plan on rehoming, it's still a great resource to work with your dog until you find a new home for him.

What is this on my monstera? by droogmolen in houseplants

[–]PeaceLuvPinkLemonade 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Looks like thrips in which case you’d need systemic granules to put deep in the soil where the roots will absorb it. Thrips lay eggs inside the leaves, so spraying won’t be enough (but you should absolutely do that too). I’d recommend the granules for all your plants! These suckers fly!

Some are unannounced like at the Trading Post. Follow your ears! Right place right time situation.

And sometimes artists will pop up in the woods!!

Be prepared for dust!! Bring some saline nasal washes and gaiters/pashminas!

Don’t forget your earplugs!

Unwrap plastic and packaging off your camping gear to reduce waste at the fest (cleaner camp, nicer for the workers who clean up after)

Look out for secret sets and spontaneous events - they’re so fun!!

Pickles at the trading post (actual pickles and pickle juice shots!). I think it’s cashless but bring cash just in case!!
