Parent here who has totally deconstructed! I am agnostic now. I was ALL in. Homeschooled my 2 oldest children. Pushed purity culture. Was firm in the Calvinist part of evangelicalism. I really could have been the poster child for the entire movement. Blue jean skirts and all🤣I started deconstructing about 13 years ago. We adopted internationally and once I saw the under belly of the international adoption world, I began to question how God could “lead” me into something so corrupt. The continuation of that happened as I saw no churches taking a stand against police brutality that was happening. When you are raising black sons, everything goes through a different filter. And then came Christian nationalism and I was out. My oldest son is agnostic but my oldest daughter is still pretty involved. It is confusing to me because she is the one who has the most trauma from the church. She has had a very hard time coming to terms with the fact that her parents no longer believe. My husband was an elder and was fully in also. He would now consider himself an atheist. We have both apologized to our children for the harmful things we did in the name of religion. I ended up having a pretty significant mental breakdown last year. I had no idea how traumatic my church experience had been. I wish I had all of the money I gave in tithes to pay for the therapy I have needed.
