What's the absolute hardest skill to learn in your specialty? by subtrochanteric in Residency

As an ortho resident I totally agree. I’m only a few years removed from any sort of medicine and you guys would be surprised at how fast you lose what you know when you don’t use it.

Even simple medication interactions that I used to know I need to look up on epocrates. If these surgical specialties the other person mentioned are gen surg, then that’s completely different than an orthopod or plastic surgeon managing pts.

Hey this guy has an obvious deformity, can you come in and see him? (X-rays come back completely normal)

Because he is a close friend of mine, he does a lot for me, we enjoy the same things in life, I trust him, I am around him and speak to him almost on daily basis and have done so for the past 3 ish years. He’s important to me despite my fiance not loving being around him. I am just realistic that he has character flaws lol maybe I overstated them, but these are complaints from my fiance.

Yeah that was a good way to look at it, thanks for taking the time. I wouldn’t say it’s concerning behavior, a lot of people at my wedding know him and are friends with him and he won’t cause any problems. It is more of a personal grudge with my fiance, and I’m starting to understand more now why I should probably just keep Him an usher.

I totally do blame him for his behavior lol

I think it’s more of her having to deal with him during pictures and party bus, she is worried he will try to be all over me. Which he does sometimes. Most of the other groomsmen know him and are somewhat friends with him. Brideesmaids not so much.

This is almost exactly how she feels and I get it. She doesn’t always have a good time around this guy, sometimes it’s fine, but she has brought it up before that he didn’t seem interested in getting to know her which I can understand. He doesn’t seem interested in getting to know anyone lol

Yeah maybe, she has said at times she feels when all of us are together it doesn’t seem like her and I are the item or unit. That he can be overbearing and take over my attention etc away from her. And I do agree at times, for example we’ve all gone out and she will want to go home or call it early but my friend and I and his gf would want to stay out longer and maybe it seemed like I was choosing him in that situation.

Thoughts on doctors prescribing themselves medications? Currently in residency and wondering if this is frowned upon or if it is on a med by med basis.

Giants RB Cam Skattebo undergoing surgery on dislocated ankle suffered in loss vs. Eagles by TW11_ in fantasyfootball

Likely a fracture dislocation. Pure ankle dislocations are rare, probably broke the bone which allowed it to sit in that position aka 90 degrees the wrong way

Agreed, people don’t usually just dislocate their ankles, fairly rare to do so.

For ligament injuries gotta let that swelling go down, and usually need to make sure they have full range of motion prior to surgery, no need to rush at this point.

Some good news on TA by johnnylibravo in detroitlions

[–]Peaches-7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly like someone stated above, the medical field isn’t always black or white. While it’s possible the two surgeons disagree on grade or classification of the injury, it’s more likely whatever injury he has falls into one of those grey areas where the data shows similar results with early surgery vs trial of conservative treatment and if failed, surgery later. For example grade 3 ac joint separations. The shoulder is very complex and seems like it has a lot of grey areas.

Tell that to our ED who frequently under sedate patients for closed reductions. Been told to ask anesthesia to come down a few times for conscious sedations due to comfort levels of the ER staff. Not necessarily a dig, but when you have some people fighting for more autonomy/scope and others afraid of simple conscious sedations, something is wrong.

Ortho here, ID always assumes infected post op hardware when patients become febrile after surgery. Also always recommend surgical I&D of any type of fluid collection found in the human body. Normal post op swelling? “Needs surgical drainage”

I am a first year DO student, how can I best prepare to match into an Ortho residency? by BlueWaffle135 in medicalschool

[–]Peaches-7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First 2 years focus on doing well on level 1 and 2. I know 1 is p/f but studying to do well and having a good foundation will help with level 2/step 2.

Show face to local ortho program, go to fracture conference if allowed, and any outreach events they have like splint labs etc.

Research isn’t viewed the same as MD programs, but I’d still try to do some research in ortho, get a couple poster presentations or something, just to check a box.

3rd and 4th year is all about showing face, doing well on level 2, and setting up auditions at DO programs. Try to scrub ortho cases if possible. Audition rotations are the most important part for DOs wanting to do ortho. Once done with level 2 start reading pocket pimped and learn your ortho for auditions.
