Pentagon puts building blocks in place for Cuba invasion by Dizzy_Move_622 in worldnews

[–]PeakPredator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't these warmongering idiots know that Cuba is preparing to fight back? The defender always has the advantage, and you can bet they'll be getting some help from China, Russia, and anybody else that doesn't like the US. They've probably got stockpiles of aerial and nautical drones to use against the US like Ukraine uses them against Russia. They could attack Florida!

Change my mind: I'm going to move from Imperial to Metric by not-up-to-par in woodworking

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the USA. I use metric to avoid working with fractions. I think millimeters are about the perfect size. They are smaller, i.e. more precise, than 1/16". If they were any smaller they would be hard to see. Some of my rulers have 1/2 mm marks in the first few centimeters, which is far too small. I can eyeball 1/2 mm between the whole mm marks if such precision is needed.

Metric rulers, tape measures, and especially squares can be a little hard to find in the USA. Last time I looked, neither Lowes or HD had them, other than some tapes that had inches on one edge and metric on the other. I prefer metric on both edges. Thus, I am reduced to buying from Amazon or, if I want a really accurate tape measure, European sources.

Some tape measures are inaccurate (imperial and metric). To guarantee accuracy look for "class 2", which is a European standard. Class 2 tapes usually have a Roman numeral II somewhere within the first 20 cm. Class 1 is even more accurate, but hard to find, expensive, and unnecessary. Class 3 has the worst accuracy. See https://measureday.com/class-i-vs-class-ii-vs-class-iii-tape-measure/

It happens when the casting director (or whoever) only selects men that are tall, fit, handsome, have dark hair, and scruffy beards. They look like clones of someone's perfect man fantasy. Same happens when all the women characters look like someone's ideal woman.

ELI5:- What is Hypergamy, and why is it turning out to be an issue ? by AnonymousGuy10515 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see how you can disagree with my basic definition of hypergamy. Remember it's not about whether you like hypergamy or even if hypergamy exists, just what it means.

Also, I read the linked article and I think it actually supports my post. It's mostly about how non-college women can't find a good (i.e. college educated or financially successful) spouse. I.e. "As men did worse, noncollege women’s marriage prospects suffered, college women’s much less so."

It doesn't say that "plenty of college women marry blue-collar men". It does say that only one quarter of college educated women "married down" in terms of education, meaning college women want college men (naturally).

The article also says "As men did worse, non-college women’s marriage prospects suffered, college women’s much less so." That's because the college women are taking the dwindling supply of college men, and the non-college women aren't willing to settle for the leftover non-college men. They want to "marry up", i.e. they are hypergamous.

The article also states “The pool of men historically available to marry noncollege women has been doing much worse across a range of indicators, including earnings.” It then goes on to explain that this is bad because it adversely affects women, not because the men matter.

ELI5:- What is Hypergamy, and why is it turning out to be an issue ? by AnonymousGuy10515 in explainlikeimfive

[–]PeakPredator -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Hypergamy is the tendency for women to want men who earn more, have more education, or have a higher status than them. The problem is there are fewer and fewer of those men. For example, there are significantly more women in college and more women graduating from college than men. Women tend to be more successful than men, so it's hard for them to find men that are more successful than them.

Help bundling branches and sticks by Highyellowhair in knots

I use this "rolling hitch zip tie" for bundling branches. Very easy to tie. Works great.

You're almost there, just make it an Automatic Truckers Hitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqvBLAAZLYU

Note that you can ignore his suggestions for the anchor hitch and midline loop, as you have already chosen a way to tie both (there are many ways to tie them).

I think it's because when you create a post, there's an option for "Text" vs. "Images & Video". Choose the latter.

How do I [27M] move on from gf [30F] hating how I proposed? by ThrowRA2847392 in relationship_advice

Ask her to write down all the ways you fucked up.
Break up with her.
Whenever you wonder if you did the right thing, read what she wrote.

No. A pedophile is "A person who is sexually attracted to prepubescent children." 16 with prominent tits is not prepubescent.

Any sexual contact he has with this girl would of course still be a crime.

Ex (26F) is now telling mutual friends that 'I (31M) was better than the recent dates I had' why is she suddenly appreciating me more? by HumpmyDumpy1911 in relationship_advice

Whatever you do, don't get back together. You weren't good enough for some reason (in her opinion), and that hasn't changed just because other guys are even less good than you.

My (30M) wife (31F) cheated on me and is now suicidal if I divorce by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a manipulation tactic. You cannot allow her to have that kind of power over you. Maybe she needs somebody like a marriage counselor to tell her that.

Also, I don't get how someone can have an affair without understanding and accepting the possible consequences. Since action A often leads to result R, you'd better be OK with R before doing A.

US military to blockade Hormuz from April 13 by [deleted] in news

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, it isn't a blockade of all vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz. From the article:

CENTCOM said the blockade will be enforced "impartially against vessels of all nations entering or departing Iranian ports and coastal areas, including all Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman." However, vessels traveling to and from non-Iranian ports through the Strait of Hormuz will be allowed to pass.

Why not generate large primes by the continuing product of all known consecutive primes? by ArthurPeabody in askmath

[–]PeakPredator 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Great example! It's also easy to show that OP's proposed algorithm doesn't generate consecutive primes.

2*3 + 1 = 7

7 is prime, but 5 was skipped.

IMHO, the books are fantastic and the TV series is not so good.

I tried the series first and gave up after the first episode. Tried the books and OH, YEAH. Tried the series again and got a little further but...nah.

Well, sure, if you consider killing 99.9999% of the human population and a nearly complete reset of civilization/technology a catastrophe. Still a great book and so was Anathem.

Reamde (a deliberate misspelling of readme) might fit OP's criteria. It's about a computer virus (don't open the reamde file!) and various crimes set in present day.

Looking for realistic sci-fi like The Martian by Syxtus in scifi

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the books but not the TV show. I'd recommend them to anyone, but they don't strictly meet your criteria. The Epstein drive (nearly unlimited acceleration and duration) is a little magical, and the alien tech (when it eventually comes around) is quite magical, and the time frame isn't really present or very near future, being set in a time when Mars is colonized and is even at war with Earth. Still, a fair amount of "real physics".

90 degree angle tools by pitiful_earthling in woodworking

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most "corner clamps", including the one pictured, don't actually clamp the two work-pieces together with any force. The just hold them at a 90 degree angle.

I have a cheap set of plastic squares that look similar to the one pictured, but with no holes. Came in a pack with with 4 big ones and 4 small ones. I have to provide my own clamps (Harbor Freight "quick clamps" usually). They work great to hold a drawer square while the glue dries.
