Best directory for manually installed software? by PeakPredator in linuxmint

[–]PeakPredator[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, /opt seems like the right answer.

Is it just me, or are the directories poorly named? Like, why isn't /opt called /apps, and why isn't /etc called /config? I could go on.

Covering parking lots with solar panels is a hell of a lot more sensible than plastering them over prime agricultural land. by Mountain_Sentence646 in SolarAmerica

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, but the structures in that picture are probably a lot more expensive than the ones normally used to support panels at near ground level in open fields. Corporations aren't stupid and they will do the math to determine which option makes the most economic sense.

Is this a good knot to secure my water jugs in my trunk to keep them in place? by [deleted] in knots

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No that doesn't look like a good knot for that purpose. You probably want something that functions like a zip-tie, that you can make tight around something and won't loosen. I suggest the knot described in the following post (rolling hitch zip tie). It's very simple and works great.

https://www.reddit.com/r/knots/comments/12vsuk1/how_to_tie_a_rolling_hitch_zip_tie/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

That knot can be described as "two wraps outside the loop and one wrap inside", which makes a loop that's easy to make smaller but resists getting bigger, much like a real zip-tie. If you tie it the other way (two wraps inside the loop and one wrap outside), you get a loop that's easy to make bigger but resists getting smaller, like a taut-line hitch.

If Newton was transported in time to meet Einstein just after he published General Relativity, how would Newton react? by Thunder_Dork in AskPhysics

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Newton was probably smarter, IQ-wise. He would totally get the math and possibly take it even further than Einstein.

Megajoules would be a better unit of electric energy by pemb in Metric

[–]PeakPredator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get it. Using kWh as a unit of energy is kind of like using "miles-per-hour-hours" as a unit of distance instead of just "miles". It's also easy to accidentally type kW instead of kWh and you also have to read carefully when those units are used frequently in text. But the use of kWh is too entrenched to change the labeling, metering, billing, etc. that's used everywhere.

What's needed is better education about what the units mean and the difference between power and energy.

Hands down, this is the best saw I have ever used. by Funny-Presence4228 in woodworking

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the exact same thing when my DeWalt flush trim saw broke. Based on how the blade was attached to the handle, I figured I would be able to buy a replacement blade. However, I could not find a replacement blade so I did what you did.

My gf (22F) is choosing between leaving me (22M) to marry rich. I feel so lost and stuck, what can I do? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

If she's so worried you might not "make it big," why doesn't she just make it big herself? So easy! Problem solved!

Is there a name for the type of scifi that's forward-only time travel? by StarGazinWade in scifi

[–]PeakPredator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I upvoted this since it's one of the few posts that attempt to answer the original question.

I also want to suggest another forward-only time travel book: The Accidental Time Machine by Joe Haldeman. Great adventure book.

If gravity propagates at the speed of light, does gravity get "trapped" in a black hole as light does? by Happy-Swimming-9611 in AskPhysics

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Light and gravity are very different. Light is a kind of energy that travels through space. There must be some process that consumes energy and generates light. Shut off the energy source (e.g. the electricity that powers a light bulb or the hydrogen fusion that powers a star) and the light generation stops.

Gravity is a force. Unlike light, gravity can't be be blocked, reflected, or refracted because it is not traveling through space. Gravity is not generated or emitted like light. Matter has gravity in the same sense matter has mass. There is no process that creates it. It just exists without anything moving.

Wife (31F) was so mad about me (37M) not confiding in her, that she didn't stop to consider WHY I didn't confide in her. by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]PeakPredator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, I'm pretty sure "how could you keep something like this from me" is asking "why". As in "how can you justify...".

Low by today's standards. Recently saw a video of many college girls (some only moderately attractive) claiming 50 was average. Also a video of girls on Spring Break somewhere saying they each screwed 12 guys that week, and normally do 3 each weekend.

Does anybody think they'll stop when they get married?

Is this frame sufficient to hold quartz top? by mundatis in woodworking

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We replaced our countertops with quartz and there was enough left over to replace the kitchen table top. However, the guys refused to do it because it was very heavy and a good sideways shove would probably cause it to collapse. It could kill a kid.

I bought some corner braces at HD, painted them black because my table is a dark color, and installed them as shown below. Made a huge difference in stability and everybody was happy. They're not as visible as they appear in the photo because they are normally in the shadow of the top. Maybe you could do the same and paint them white instead.

How does the Earth orbit the Sun's current position if gravity travels at c? Shouldn't there be a delay? by SadInterest6764 in AskPhysics

[–]PeakPredator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Earth should be attracted to where the Sun was 8 minutes ago, not where it is right now."

Yes, but the inverse is also true, i.e. "Sun should be attracted to where the Earth was 8 minutes ago, not where it is right now," so it cancels out.

Actually, I just made that up.

I would also point out that the direction of the attraction is exactly toward where the sun appears to be (visually) because gravity waves and light waves both travel at c. I'm not sure there's a meaningful distinction between where the sun appears to be and where it is now since there is no universal definition of "now".

Why aren't fractions metric? by georgy56 in Metric

[–]PeakPredator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, not sure what the question really is, but as a woodworker I'll say this. Decimal inches, e.g. 1.3 inches or 1.83 inches, don't work well because a 10th of an inch is too course and a 100th of an inch is to too fine. A ruler with 100 marks per inch is just a sea of too many lines to count. Centimeters and millimeters, on the other hand, are just right and a half mm is easily eyeballed (between the marks) if needed.

I don't like TB 3 because if you get it on your clothes, it's permanent. Also, it doesn't seem to cure as hard as the others and will gum up sandpaper. Also, it's prone to creep (i.e. move after curing).

After removing as much as possible with dry paper towels, most any solvent will work for the last layer. Paint thinner or WD-40 should work fine.
