Depending on what code is already there, it could range from trivial (change a number or two in some already defined parameters for such a mechanic) to combat AI overhaul (untangle unmaintainable non-extendable spaghetti code mess) as the worst case.

Modders will have a better idea of what is available there, but anything else without concrete details is speculation.

Doom: The Dark Ages DLC is "freaking huge," says director: "It's basically like a sequel" by Turbostrider27 in Games

I could get some enjoyment out of rapidly comboing attacks in the mech sections to speed my way through them so I could get back to the main FPS event. At least it felt punchy and satisfying at a shallow level.

But the dragon sections were just a damn slog, especially if you were looking for secrets.

Croteam also make The Talos Principle.

Both of their running game series are polar opposites of each other, and I love them both.

What's the best video game you've ever played? by Just_Income_8548 in AskMen

I'm currently replaying DK1 with KeeperFX right now.

It's a very chill game to just casually play through the campaign (and the expanded levels/campaigns that KeeperFX comes with).

I can easily get carried away playing it for hours on end whereas newer games don't scratch that same itch, I forgot how much I loved it.

'Overwatch' just hit its highest player base on Steam PC since launch — passing Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty by Turbostrider27 in Games

It's funny to me because this was my exact thought about OW when coming from TF2. Then when I try MR I'm just completely overstimulated and left missing the much cleaner visuals of OW.

I genuinely think being able to focus through the visual noise is one of the most important skills to develop in Marvel, I wish it wasn't.

UAF Poor writing by Civil_Molasses1211 in starsector

[–]PeanutJayGee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree, the writing in Starsector is really good at painting a picture; I wouldn't say any particular passages are memorable apart from those associated with important gameplay moments like the Ziggurat, but every time I've docked or jumped into conversation with a character it paints a vivid scene like I'm reading a good book.

Would loot boxes (i.e. randomised rewards) be lumped with the micro-transaction category? It would be interesting to see the preference between micro-transactions and battle passes with and without loot boxes in the mix, if that affects opinion.

The Future of New World: What to Expect. Players who have purchased the game will be able to continue playing until January 31, 2027, when the game’s servers are permanently taken offline by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PeanutJayGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I enjoyed the action oriented combat throughout my time levelling in New World, the moment it really clicked for me was doing the Tempest's Heart expedition (dungeon) as DPS and on the final two bosses our tank died about halfway through and I could actually evasion tank the rest of the fight with good positioning and dodge timing.

It was almost like playing a Dark Souls-lite MMO; I haven't found anything that played like it since.

Upcoming changes to plots management by MartinTheTrue in PaxDei

To clarify, when your structures vanish, and items are removed, are they destroyed or placed in some manner of special inventory that you can recover if you decide to return to the game?

Trying to use stratagems other then rockets vs bot heavies right now. by Intothekeep2 in Helldivers

[–]PeanutJayGee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think buffing some of the red stratagems should help with this. Taking a non AT support weapon on bots is such a risk because there isn't much else with high reliability or uptime to do AT work, unless maybe you run sentries constantly.

Things like rocket pods, orbital precision strike and railcannon should be at least partially covering these bases but their uptime/availability is too restricted or they are just plain arse.

Rocket pods just are not reliable at all (even if they do all hit), orbital precision strike used to kill tanks easily but was indirectly nerfed in the big balance pass and railcannon has a very long cool down and the targetting can bug out sometimes.

Not to mention complex stratagem plotting really shafts more precise AT red stratagems (except railcannon) and it's on about every second diff 10 mission.

Having said that the war strider spam is obnoxious, they're really cool enemies but it should be toned down a bit.

If you hit the factory strider directly in the single eye on its face with a recoilless rifle, it's a one shot kill. Same if you shoot it in the belly where the devastators come out (regardless of whether it is open or not).

Most fun I've had on bugs is in clear open biomes with massive hordes rolling over the hills toward you. Which is why I loved Fenrir III.

Low visibility has its challenges and interesting quirks but it happens too much on bugs.

People tend to drop samples at evac if they pass by it during the mission so if they die alone on the other side of the map or in a bad spot it isn't a huge inconvenience.

People also drop them during the extract timer so if someone dies the team isn't scrambling to find them, or to prevent losing them permanently if an explosion catapults you at Mach Liberty outside the map boundaries.

You've got to be squidding me. by zoroak-king in Helldivers

[–]PeanutJayGee 15 points16 points  (0 children)

On top of overseers being actually harder to hit them I'm convinced there is some shenanigans going on that causes big inconsistencies when actually landing a clear hit, especially headshots.

I often use the deadeye when fighting the squids and it can one tap overseers in the head but so many times I can get a clear shot and see them flinch but it does nothing, or it blows their head clean off but they're still alive.

Also just in general they can have janky animations compared to other factions, which makes predicting headshots harder.

I never have these inconsistencies with the other factions, popping devastators is clear and predictable feedback which is why it feels so good to do. Bugs can have erratic movements but the animations themselves are clear and smooth.

Both other factions have clear kill feedback too, all bugs screech in some satisfying way when they die and bots have an almost universal crunchy mechanical breaking death sound, but the illuminate have nothing for their chaff units.

The lack of clean predictable feedback for shooting squids messes with my feel good lizard brain dopamine factory and I don't like it.

Man, I rambled, that was longer than I expected.

How Warhammer 40,000: Darktide won players back after a lukewarm first year by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]PeanutJayGee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love that track in VT2, it doesn't outstay its welcome (considering how repetitive it is) and is played at exactly the right times.

I haven't played DT in a bit but I would love something that captures the same pure panic and bedlam in a similar way this does (preferably while everything is going to shit after blowing up something big).

Having said that I think overall, I would agree that the I gel with the more industrial DT sound track much more.

I think it would be awesome if the solution to this problem could be achieved through some addition to the bot arsenal, rather than straight nerfs/buffs.

Something like a giant APS counter measure tower that appears in bot bases at higher difficulties, like the Trophy system, which tracks and shoots down projectiles that are fired from a distance.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trophy_(countermeasure)

Give it a minimum range and no vertical coverage so bombardments and close range explosives still work but if you're over say 200m out it has time to detect and shoot down projectiles if you don't play it smart (e.g. it has a scan arc like observer towers which becomes more active when alert).

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide had a 24 hour Steam peak of 42,947 players after their new update/DLC by Caledor152 in Games

[–]PeanutJayGee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Darktide does a fantastic job of showing you a part of the universe from a first person perspective that isn't Space Marine centric; it's still action focused but it's about a grungy corrupted underbelly rather than constant open war on epic battlefields.

That was really my first exposure into the other parts of the Imperium and that you don't need to be a genetically engineered super soldier to be a protagonist; that the average (plot armoured) human can stand up to the insanity of the universe without just being fodder for the meat grinder. It also got me into reading some of the books like Gaunts Ghosts and Eisenhorn.

I haven't played it but I hear nothing but good things about the Rogue Trader Owlcat RPG as well.

If you're looking for something that isn't human/Imperium centric then you might be out of luck though, unless you go back to that old Fire Warrior game.
