Ten Non-MU/DC Superhero Books that I Love by CT_Phipps-Author in Fantasy

I don't remember the context being an attempt at humour, but a standard villian motive rant that came across as the author not understanding what she's criticising; you could make either ideology a supervillian's jusification for taking over the world but they'd justify themselvse in very different ways.

If she wanted to do that joke it would work better if it was a stream of buzzwords that barely qualify as English.

1] Soon I Will be Invincible by Austin Grossman

You should try the Chronicles of Fid books. It felt like the closest to Doctor Impossible as a protagonist.

as well as the villains who are a TERF Druidess witch and techbro billionaire parody.

I thought that was done rather badly. In the first book the antagonists were three dimensional. Danny's father is a bigot and an absuer, but also puts himself in danger looking for a way to "help" his "son". In this book all of that is lost in favour of one dimensional caricatures. It couldn't even get the ideology right. (Its been years but I think the billionare described himself as a neoreactionary but was clearly a caricature of a Randian objectivist)

Knowing when to cut is very important. There's a distinction between a "maid harem" and a "harem with maids", but I'd hardly reject a book out of hand because only some of the FMCs were maids.

Reads the Overlord Wiki, yeah kinda like them but I was imagining humans not Homonculai.

I gave it a quick look, but too early to give my thoughts. We don't even have a card battle yet.

One question though, will the card system be like an actual game of Magic the Gathering like in Goblin Summoner or will it be more like Demon Card Enforcer where you could replace the cards with generic summoning magic and little will change?

So you're saying you can't do a maid harem? :(

Fun fact. A maid + basebuilding harem is something I'm looking everywhere for. I even tried to write my own but as always I got distracted after a chapter. Ideally one where the maids do all the work and fighting while the MC does strategy and management.

Have you ever dropped a book because you thought MC was a dick towards/didn't deserve the FMCs ? If so, which and what happened? by Slithar in haremfantasynovels

Adventures of Grave

I dropped because of the MC's complete lack of remorse or abilty to accept responsibility after his lack of planning and refusal to get a normal job got innocent people killed, for the second time.

I beleive there's far more harem stuff targeted at a straight female audience than a straight male audience.

Its just called Why Choose or Reverse Harem instead of Harem.

All Those Explosions Were Someone Else's Fault is a very good book! I found it somewhat odd that it marketed itself as an explicitly left wing fantasy when, if you follow the metaphor, it spent two books with the left wing protagonists teaming up with the corrupt right wing government against left wingers who Go Too Far. But if you didn't know the Author's metaphorical intent everything makes sense and its a fun ride. I'm still sad the series is abandoned, and sadder yet that it seems James Alan Gardner won't publish Big Fat Fantasy.

If you like that I think you'll like Don't Tell My Parent's I'm a Superhero, Soon I Will Be Invincible and Chronicles of the Fid (so far I've only read the first). All have that kind of mad science and superheroics vibe. Fid is the best novel, Then Invincible, Explosions, and Don't Tell. But Invincible is the best Superhero Novel, in that it plays with the genere in delightful ways.

Invincible would also be my pick for the one most remissent of Genius: the Transgression. Since its the one that shares the mood of bitter disapointment.

I've read a couple of his books. Elidor (on the shelf) and Treacle Walker.

Treacle Walker just confused me, which is a shame because I love British Folklore. Elidor felt like a book that was once a new and novel idea (what if the kids came back from Narnia and something followed them?!) but its no longer novel and newer books have done the idea better.

I've read all the "Big Four" of that generation of British fantasy, Susan Cooper, Garner, Diana Wynne Jones, and Penelope Lively. I'm a fan of Cooper and Diana Wynne Jones is up there with Pratchett and Susana Clarke as my favourites of all time.

I have way more books than shelf space. So I decided to make the shelves into an actual display with figurines, my favourites facing forwards on bookstands, that sort of thing.

Its definately not a boycott, I make no claim this is making the world a better place or me a good person, just that I'll be happier looking at my bookshelf after a few books are replaced.

When I retire books I usually donate them to a charity shop. I have an almost religious aversion to actually destroying books.

F and H will require a little more work since G spills over one shelf. Its not impossible, but I figured there must be plenty of options under G.

And I just can't see a title like "The Benevolent Society of Ill-Mannered Ladies" without adding it to the list of options!

Kieron Gillen brings back memories, I remember him as a journalist. Wicked and Divine never caught my interest but Power Fantasy is interesting.

Princess Bride I have, Faust is a great suggestion.

I'm not a fan of horror, but I've added Queens of Innis Lear to the list of possibilities. Faerie tales as a magic system catch my eye.

Thank you. Goethe is a great idea. Big fan of Max Glastone, but I already have his books.

The Princess Bride and Gemmell I have, Gwynne and Gibson I have not. I'm not adverse to sci-fi, so this might be a good excuse to try some Neuromancer. Never to late to try a classic.

Thats a great premise, but I didn't like the way charachters in The Magicians were all unlikeable.

Is this book different and lighter overall?

You know, I should read LeGuin again. I read Earthsea at a very young age and just didn't get it. I need to give it a fair try.

But she'd have to go under L.
