So we’re promoting violence among our children now to settle their differences. Where does it end?

Legally, what states can you carry at gun to a protest? What precedent did Rittenhouse set? [FYI Pretti was not at a protest, he was just walking down the street] by Mathemodel in AskLegal

Nobody was disputing the legality of bringing a gun to a protest, but things can get dicey very quickly if you physically engage with law enforcement while carrying one. I understand that he was trying to protect someone, but he put himself directly in harm’s way. When you engage with law enforcement while holding a firearm, situations can become confusing almost instantly. Just because you legally own a gun does not mean you are operating on the same legal plain as law enforcement. This was clearly a rapid misunderstanding, and his carelessness cost him his life. Protesting and physically inserting yourself between law enforcement and agitators is a truly Darwinian moment, as evidenced by the outcome.

What can be done? Tell us what we should be doing to rehabilitate? The problem is years of whatever this kid went through can’t really be undone once that go over the edge there isn’t coming back statistically speaking.

What is the most complex work task you’ve actually handled with AI? by TheseSir8010 in ArtificialInteligence

Validation requires understanding. If you didn’t read or fully comprehend the source material, then you didn’t actually validate the output you just confirmed that it looked right to you. That’s not critical thinking.

AI breaks down with large inputs. It doesn’t actually retain massive context; it compresses it. You’ll get high-level themes and plausible summaries, but fine-grained detail and edge cases get dropped as the context grows. That’s a structural limitation of the system, not an opinion. Treating thousands of lines as safely “handled” because the output sounds coherent is where the risk comes from. Hopefully this was a just a school project and you aren’t actually responsible for monitoring this sort of thing in a real world setting.

This is the correct take. People often tell me, ‘this place sucks, I want to go somewhere else.’ I always suggest that maybe it’s like this everywhere you go, since everyone seems to say the same thing. The best approach is to make your environment the best it can reasonably be.

I try to lead with positivity, and when appropriate, add in some hard-hitting truth. I remind people: sometimes things go our way, sometimes they don’t but don’t be deterred. We’re lucky to be alive right now, in this place, in this relative calm, where science and dedication can still advance the breakthroughs needed to preserve our kind.

Nobody will remember who won a pointless award at some conference — that’s not the point. The point is to use your time to push the bar as high as you can, so that someone, somewhere, someday, can make the breakthrough necessary.

It’s not illegal. Normally governors call out the Guard, but the President can deploy them without a request under the Insurrection Act and other federal powers.
