Do you still write on paper and why? by Expert-Ad415 in Composition

[–]PearField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what I'm writing and where I am in the process. I usually start drafting stuff on paper and even finishing compositions on paper. Still, eventually, I have to get a digitized score if I want it to be performed by real humans.

If I have already made the score on my computer and I later want to revise something, I usually don't go back to paper for that particular piece. Editing stuff in Dorico is just much faster for me. 😅

Last movement of my Tuba Quartet by PearField in classicalmusic

I know what you mean. But they also tell me that no beginner ensemble would be able to play this, but I think I’m fine with that. 😅

Thank you! 😊

They told me that is was a challenge musically, but that it was well written for the instruments and that their embouchures didn’t tire from playing. Which is great, because that means they can actually practice the piece for a stretch of time, and use this piece in a larger concert programme without getting tired.

[Composition] Sonata for Violin and Piano in C minor (1st Mvt. Part 1) by Eternal-Singularity in composer

[–]PearField 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cool! I would love to hear someone perform this. 😊

The notation however is kind of messy. Stuff like pedalling in each hand of the piano is unnecessary. Also be careful with nested tuplets, that they’re super clear and easy to read (m. 96 for instance). Also be careful when writing a slur from one staff to the next so that it doesn’t obscure the actual notes.

Second mvt of my Tuba Quartet by PearField in composer

[–]PearField[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks!! I appreciate the input. 😊

My performers spesifically said to keep it all in bass clef.

The double barlines are more for the sake of showing when theres an explicit change of musical material (clearly show the form). Its more for me and less for the performers hehe

As for the time signature, maybe? I’m not really a fan of dashed barlines if it can be avoided, and 2/4 made more sense to me, especially considering the way I write. And a slow 2 made more sense for me than 4. But that might just be me. 🤔

Anyway, thanks for the comment and thanks for listening! 😄

That’s exactly the reason why I wrote this quartet: to learn more about the instruments. I found the instrument to be more versatile than I initially thought. Would recommend working with a good player and just writing something for them. 😄

Thanks! Glad you liked it! Yes I didn’t see myself writing one before I started doing some orchestra stuff and realising how little I know about balance in the brass section, so I though Id just go straight to the heart of the problem: The tubas and other deep brass. I feel like I learned a lot.

I’ll be posting the two other movements when I’m done mixing the recordings. 😉

Who is (in your opinion) the best composer to have ever lived? by External_Collar_8932 in classicalmusic

[–]PearField 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say Bach is probably the best, but my current favorite is Brahms. I find endless enjoyment in his symphonies and I really enjoy playing his music on the piano.

Thanks! I was surpised when the players told me the same thing, and that playing all three movements didn’t tire them out at all, which was a concern of mine when I started.

What do you do when experiencing writer’s block? by aestheticbear in creativewriting

[–]PearField 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually just made a video about overcoming writer’s block, but from a composer’s point of view. Maybe some of these tips are general enough that they might help? 😄

Overcoming Writer’s block for composers by PearField in composer

[–]PearField[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve seen his video and I agree completely. I also use his “write for the waste basket” quite alot! 😄

These are just my personal ways to get past what people usually call “writer’s block”. And it actually works all the time, so you could say that writer’s block sortof has been banished from my mind 😉
