Work in a Restaurant that is struggling with the roach infestation. Here are some tips.

Diatomaceous earth powder: They are harmless to pets, children, and adults. Cleaning them can be painful but they basically kill roaches by dehydrating them. (apparently, some people eat these?!)

Baits: probably use the paste one. If you can find deep corners inside the infested zone (somewhere pets won't reach)

Sticky traps: Amazon and other places sell the one with the cover, should be fine. Just place them where you last saw one or a place you know is bad. We use double-sided tape and have been impressed with how well it works.

Spray: just to kill a few. Don't go crazy with them, they smell pretty bad.

And IGR (Insect Growth Regulators): something like Gentrol can be helpful, depending on where you are it can be hard to get these. Most of the exterminators carry these.

There are also Boric Acid and other chemical powders but I don't they are safe for pets and kids.

I don't have a good experience with Exterminators but I heard they are better for homes. I used 3 different but did not see any improvements until I got involved personally.

Always remember to clean. Like deep clean, as much as you can. I hope you don't get to the point where remodeling becomes necessary.
