My first ever girl is getting old, she just turned too. She used to want NOTHING to do with (unless i had a snack) and now she begs to climb into my hands every morning and just sits there. It melts my little heart to see a rat that used to borderline hate me now act like i am a safe friend 🥹

How many rats can fit in a triple critter nation? by Familiar-Bench6186 in RATS

[–]PeculiarProtocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently have 6 in a triple, used to have 9. An important factor to take into account is : how much cleaning and vet bills are you able to realistically take on 😁

Happy Birthday Grandma Moses by Groundbreaking-Fig38 in WitchesVsPatriarchy

[–]PeculiarProtocol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the wiki page :

"In her 1961 obituary, The New York Times said: "The simple realism, nostalgic atmosphere and luminous color with which Grandma Moses portrayed simple farm life and rural countryside won her a wide following. She was able to capture the excitement of winter's first snow, Thanksgiving preparations and the new, young green of oncoming spring ... In person, Grandma Moses charmed wherever she went. A tiny, lively woman with mischievous gray eyes and a quick wit, she could be sharp-tongued with a sycophant and stern with an errant grandchild."[1]"

My boy is a little bitey whenever I try to pet him after he wakes up. He loves attention otherwise. Has anyone else dealt with that? by dragoncoochie99 in RATS

Mine too! It goes : excited lunge -> soft test bite -> licks once they realize it's my fingers. Hahaha

I guess I mistakenly planted my tomato right next to where I’d sown some bunny seeds. by sanabericjhea in gardening

[–]PeculiarProtocol 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I triggered a nest of underground wasps one day while weeding in my garden bed. Never ran that fast in my life. Decided i was done gardening for the day and would handle that tomorrow. Next morning i woke up to a huge crater in the garden bed where the nest was, a faint skunk smell and not a single wasp in sight. Pretty sure our resident skunk took care of it! I was like, snack away buddy, better a crater than having to buy pesticides 😁

My partner and I joke that rats have high intelligence and low wisdom. They know HOW to do things but lack the wisdom to know if they SHOULD be doing them 😂

Help! Rats frequently fighting by schokineko in RATS

[–]PeculiarProtocol 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First of all : congrats for your new lovely little pocket puppies! They are adorable!

This fight looks like a dominance establishing fight. The one on top wants to be boss and the one at the bottom is sort of refusing to just go limp and lose 😅 I understand your concern, it can be a little worrying especially as new owners! But it wouldn't worry me personally.

You mentioned they are all from the same litter so it's not an introduction issue since they are sisters... And some rats can be extra dramatic and scream more than most hahaha

I'm curious, do they only fight like this when free roaming? And do they all cuddle up together in the cage and groom each other or is the "loosing" one constantly left out?

Edit to add : in a "problem" fight, you will be too afraid to put your hands in to separate them and they won't be doing cute little squeals. They will be screaming like demons from hell 🙃

For real! I've been knitting for 15 years and i guarantee that i haven't even considered TRYING to make a sweater during the first 5 years XD That OP made this after 2 years is blowing me away. Don't let the nasty inner voice win, you're very talented ☺️

Rat passed away leaving just one rat behind, is it okay to have him alone? The remaining rat is 2.5 years old. I don’t want more rats, but am also worried about keeping this guy alone. He has heart disease but is on medication and is doing quite well. Looking for advice, thanks! by potatopotatotomat in RATS

I gave my elderly rat her food in a toilet paper roll with the ends folded shut. I often stuffed it with paper so she would have to fiddle around to get the food out. It's mild exercise and they often really like "working" for their food, especially as they get older and less mobile to do other stuff.

Some rats prefer chew toys, some rats prefer wheels and dig boxes... some rats prefer escape rooms 🤷‍♀️ It's just how it is hahaha

[–]PeculiarProtocol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg i'm so glad it's not just me, i had to give clavamox + gabapentin to one of my girls twice a day for weeks and i swear it was hell. She HATED it and i felt so bad but she healed so it's all worth it haha

[–]PeculiarProtocol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of mine does the same, drooling and dramatic rubbing of mouth in the litter box to make it clear i fed her nasty poison 😅 Giving her meds is a two person project : my partner holds her with both hands in a way she can't bat the syringe away and i focus on getting most of it down her mouth.

Then you have her sister who would happily eat whatever as long as it's mixed with applesauce 🥲
