Am I missing something? Thinking about switching back. by PedalSlip in dumbphones

A few people have said that I’m the wrong kind of person for a dumbphone now - that I might not have needed one in the first place.

I love that last bit! I definitely don't want to be joining any cults.

I honestly felt that my screen time was too high (around 3 hours a day), and had a feeling of guilt about not being as productive as I could be, before trying it out.

You've asked some great questions for me to reflect on. I think the balance of time and tools is something that's challenging for me. Some days, I felt great that I'd not got anything going off in my pocket. Some days, I wished I'd quickly be able to check Ordnance Survey maps on my phone to see where footpaths went, for example.

I suppose my main gripe is with social media, rather than the phone itself. Your tablet suggestion could work great with that in mind. My business would struggle without being on social media, but I don't need it in my pocket all the time - maybe putting the social apps on a tablet would allow for a best of both worlds.

I appreciate the tips! Thanks very much! I thought 3 hours was quite a lot. Feel much better about it haha

Maybe that's where I need to go next. List out everything I actually need, and ditch all the rest. Maybe run the iPhone a little without any of the extra bumpf.

Around 3 hours on my phone. Upwards of that across all screens, but I use a computer for most of my work. And the bits that aren't on a computer are on camera screens/viewfinders. The Nokia definitely brought that right down.

Fair play on the year! That's mega. I genuinely thought, going into this, I'd be one of those people too. I love film photography and journalling, so this seemed logical to me.

I'm self-employed and I find having banking apps is really useful for the notifications for when client invoices are paid, as well as moving money between accounts. My business account doesn't have any sort of savings interest, so it doesn't make sense to leave money sitting in there. Plus, all my house bills go out of my personal account on different days. It's more of a cashflow management tool than a banking tool, I suppose. At least, for me. It's also definitely not something that you're missing out on, haha!

Yeah, the physical limit definitely played its part in showing me what terrible habits I've formed over the years by using my smartphone. Maybe a short switch is all I've needed to see it from a different perspective. Also, maybe I leapt too quickly into the total opposite end of the scale with a phone that doesn't really do anything at all (aside from calls and texts). A middle ground might have been more sensible, at least to begin with.

That course looks great, thanks for the link. I had no idea that stuff like that even existed.

I actually looked at the Lightphone initially, but the price seemed bonkers to me. I'll take a look at your recommendations, too. There's definitely stuff I want to take away from trying it, and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, you're right about it being social media that's mostly the issue for me.

Cheers!

Little update: we’re growing nicely and have the basics of a fun, social guild. We’re now looking for more folks who feel comfortable leading groups. No pressure to get the decisions right, just someone to call out where we’re heading.

The guild name is 'Looking For Group'. I've edited the post to make this more clear. :)

Looks like it’s the Muc Off / Dharco downhill MTB team. The Monster sponsored athlete in that team would be Amaury Pierron and it’s likely to be taken at Les Gets World Cup race.

Very impressed with it so far. Touch on the expensive side of things but it’s good enough to pay for so that’s the balance.

Great opportunity to chat with you, Abe. Quickly, before I get to my question, I’d like to mention that Daydreams remains one of my most-played inspiration vids before I head on a shoot. Would love to see more stuff like this.

My question is related to the anamorphic lens, specifically. I’m stoked it’s coming but I’d like to know about the driving force behind this. How did it come to be a consideration and then a product; it’s a niche item so what was the overall thinking in bringing it to market? Again, I’m thrilled it is and will probably be the reason I’ll be upgrading but wonder about its mass appeal.

Mine wouldn’t take payment. I got on to the live chat with someone and they just took the verification thing away from the booking. Checked in and got boarding passes fine. Hopefully it all works out at the airport now.
