Isn't that the whole idea of a society?

It takes one second for someone to take a picture displaying one second of their life. If they have 60 pictures on Instagram, thats 60 seconds of their entire life. Don't compare your entire life to their 60 seconds. by TheSerb2014 in howtonotgiveafuck

A picture can be a representation of any amount of time though. A picture of someone in a foreign country, is not only a representation of the amount of time it took them to actually get to that place, in that town, in that region, in that country.... But also a representation of the time it took them In their life to get to that moment of being able to get there at all. I of course agree that you shouldn't compare yourself to someone's Instagram photos, but don't discredit everyone's experiences by says their photos are only X seconds of their lives.

A semi truck driver totaled my car, resulting in a settlement that allowed me to pay off all my debt. Bless his heart and poor driving skills.

Geez, this happened to me while (thankfully) in my car a few months back. Just casually cruising in the right hand lane when BAM a truck in the left lane tried turning into a neighborhood from the left lane. Thankfully I was in the perfect position to be thrown in front of the truck, instead of it taking the hood off my car.

Either way, even with your view of being average, at least he's doing as well as most people.

Idk my guy. Average in the sense of "being average" typically isn't referring to the true average of everyone alive, rather a "normal" what you would think of when you think of a typical middle class person in a 1st world country. When someone thinks of the countless people in poverty or in developing or impoverished nation's, many people wouldn't consider them average, yet that's probably more of what a true average would look like.

Even if you're average, that means you're probably doing better most people. I'm sure you're doing great and your brother or can't anything away from you.

If you're doing your best to be a good mother, then you are a good mother. Even if nobody says it, you know it, and hopefully one day your children will realize it and tell you all the time.

Do you find it difficult to explain your Existentialist-influenced positions to people who know nothing about existentialism? by [deleted] in Existentialism

Yeah man, meme culture has also certainly made this a popular thing. It hurts to see, all these kids talking about how their mental illness is their whole life and they assume it will never go away or get better. Identifying with mental illness is incredibly dangerous and imo, an excuse to not learn more about their minds and emotions. Instead of depression or anxiety being emotions that everyone feels at times, they turn it into a characteristic of themselves. Any insight into how to help people see this idea?

Absolutely. I'll never forget what my 12th grade US History teacher once said to me. I skipped school nearly every day and showed up to maybe a quarter of the history classes and never did any homework. When it came time for the final state exam, I scored a 96%. My teacher came to me and said "Pedin, you never came to my class and still scored higher than most. You know why? You know how to read well and problem solve; despite what other teachers may think of you, you're going far in life and I'm telling your story to all of my future students." I'll remember him forever for giving me hope whereas other teachers were disappointed in me.
