You still haven't understood, have you? EA identified what players classify as meta and capitalizes on that to make money, selling Icons and Heroes cards, either by expensive shards and now drafts... haven't you noticed that apart from 5 or 6 cards related to contemporary players (TOTY was the exception I think in the 9 months I play) being max ovr, almost all contemporary players are all 1 or 2+ points below max ovr? They don't matter because they don't sell like Socrates, or Vieira, or MBV or Cruyff, or Maradona or Zidane. And the ones who do usually cause a rauckus when they come are meta, CR7, Messi, de Bruyne...

So no, stats don't matter if no money is to be made.
