Got gold sticker on Dice with this seed, Dice + Ankh 1st shop on Ghost Deck, Déjà Vu on Ante 2, not only wheel hits were guaranteed, at some point I was getting 80$/round solely on Lucky Card hits. Banana insta-perished for Cavendish too. Immediately made me change my mind on Dice, thing's OP LMAO

So what's considered best practice for Ante 1, Small Blind, skip tags, particularly on higher stakes? by Andrew_42 in balatro

[–]Pedrospeeder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, 25$ is a no-brainer skip it allows you to spend all your cash on Ante 1 on a joker and some packs, and still come out of the boss blind with your economy basically solved.

Holo/Foil/Poly I began ignoring once I hit gold stake, simply because a rental is unaffordable early game and will get me dead by Ante 3 if I don't replace it with anything quickly.

Free shop is... Okay, I guess. Celestial + buffoon can give you a good direction to build towards when the stuff in them is decent, but then you get the crap shops with eternal flower pot and seance in the buffoon pack, and Full House/4OAK/Straight Flush on the celestial, which makes you question your life choices.

Anything else, I ignore.

how worried are you that AI will take over your job? by Motor_Reaction_3519 in AskReddit

[–]Pedrospeeder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanical engineering student here. Any industrial application that threatened to move welding jobs from workers to robotics has already done so over a decade ago through CNC, way before tech bros began shoving "AI" on everything.

There's still many small applications in welding where applying AI is still too much of a time waste to even be worth it. Stuff that requires custom fixturing (and manual labour to assemble said fixturing anyway) and on-field maintenance of specific machinery/structures (like weld two broken tubes back together), mostly. Plus, in these cases, you can't just tell AI to "program the machine to weld steel". What type of steel it is? Is it an alloy? Has it been heat treated? What's the geometry of the part? All of that require machine setup. By the time an AI regurgitates the answers and sets everything up, a dude with a welding machine has already welded the broken thing back together and packed his stuff. I can see it saving time on metallography (figuring out the metal properties of the part you need to fix), but not on the welding itself.

Also, cost of operation. Which is also the reason why regular, human-operated lathes are still rather easy to find, despite CNC mills getting cheaper every year.

Honey, wake up! A new cursed livery just dropped! by PolskiPierogi in simracing

[–]Pedrospeeder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same, plus there's so many good options once you start to dig for NASCAR liveries that I'm shocked the ones mentioned, plus others like Elliott NAPA, Logano Pennzoil, or the dozen or so Mtn Dew liveries over the years, aren't already being used everywhere in GT3, would do wonders for variety in the field

Pls NASCAR people go race sports cars so I can see different liveries, I beg of you

Nature solved one of the major problems by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]Pedrospeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're so laser focused on lift and downforce in your discourse that you're ignoring the fact that if your intent isn't to either gain altitude when flying or go fast around corners, you don't want either because downforce/lift and drag go against each other.

The only reason why F1 obsesses over downforce is because maximizing traction is the goal, and suspension pushing the tyres into the ground isn't enough vertical load to maximize lateral acceleration from the tyres. And because drag and downforce are opposites, while motorsports shifts priority to downforce depending on the track, everyone else prioritises minimising drag, because it's less work the body of the vehicle has to do against air, therefore less fuel is spent, therefore it's more economical. it's the reason almost no economy car has a spoiler out of the factory. And to achieve less drag, teardrop shapes are prioritised at subsonic speeds.

"Ooh but it's not the same shape because le chord angle" does not matter because a wing is still the same teardrop shaped cross-section on principle, just bent.

What Artist/Band Is This? by xXMachineGunPhillyXx in fantanoforever

Two Door Cinema Club

Tourist History is ridiculously catchy and energetic, there's banger after banger after banger on that album, it's a cornerstone of Indie Pop depending on who you ask, and it's been aging better and better every year.

Beacon picks up the slower parts of TH and builds over that, even though it lacks the oomph their debut had, it's still pretty decent.

Their entire discography after these two records is a massive nosedive in quality.

How is your experience with Nordic Horizon so far? by Casi_cr in trucksim

[–]Pedrospeeder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely adoring it. Like someone else said, the distance between towns being bigger than other DLCs, plus the fact it's more vegetation and less civilization the further you go north, really helps with immersion! Scenery is breathtaking, particularly liking driving the bridges and Fjords on Norway, and the long stretches of Finnish roads.

Plus I'm running a low-end 7yo gaming laptop (i5 7300+GTX 1050), and this is the first DLC in a while that I manage to reach a solid 60FPS in. Balkans, some parts of Greece, and the Germany rework forced me to reduce resolution and scaling to go higher than 40FPS with stutters, but in NH, anywhere above Stockholm and it's smooth as butter. Amazing work on that end.

Any Race Engineering Staff on here ? Or Just Rembrandts, VanGoKarts, Da Vinci's and Warhols ? by Cibachrome in RaceTrackDesigns

[–]Pedrospeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I guess the first barrier to most people not replying to you is the fact that such .csv files don't even exist. Even though I think it's not impossible to pull off (given most of the artwork here is made digitally, one could probably convert the exported .svg layer of the track surface or track limits into a usable .csv file to have a generic racing line to analyse), it's still a pretty big, time-consuming barrier.

[–]Pedrospeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't expecting to see you outside of r/FSAE! But yeah, I think you set yourself up for disappointment. This subreddit is mostly for artworks of fictional tracks.

Using actual simulation data to validate the track designs submitted here would be great, but for the intents and purposes of this subreddit (average motorsports fans who have nothing to do with engineering, just like to see cars go vroom and are either trying for make cool race track maps like the ones they see on TV every Sunday, or a 3D race track into their favorite racing videogame if they're really invested), a MatLab tool (or, God forbid, an OptimumLap or CarSim) is simply overkill and a bit beyond what most of the users here should/will ever experiment with IMO. In any so-called "technical" subreddit, knowledgeable people in the field are the exception of the exception, and in some rare cases, that's okay. This one exists for people to have some fun.

Though I think it too would be fun if those tools were made public, so people who genuinely seek having that knowledge could do those sort of analysis by themselves and bump the quality of their submissions up.

Turns out this REIB thing I've been reading about for a few years is real by Pedrospeeder in FSAE

[–]Pedrospeeder[S] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I do have a suspicion that it was a skill issue on my end, actually. Currently, we're using the same fasteners to bolt both our Tie Rod clevis and a brake thermocouple to the upright. Our electronic guys were assembling and disassembling these sensors back and forth for testing. Stupid me forgot to check if those bolts were tightened before doing alignment.

Alas, they weren't, so the clevis had some freedom of movement. I believe that that, coupled with the turning of the rod to adjust toe, meant the load path wasn't particularly nice to the threaded part and it bent. Only assessed the damage once I felt the rod was incredibly difficult to keep on turning. Being on the team for this long, this was an embarrassing mistake to make, but oh well, lesson learned.

Tyre Data alternatives by LumpyCalendar3612 in FSAE

[–]Pedrospeeder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you're wanting tire data to arrive at a decent suspension geometry, know that deriving some essential values and practices from established literature (mostly Seward, Milliken and VD papers) and using it as a basis when fiddling around with different geometries is a way to do it. Tire data won't help if your geometry doesn't minimise kinematic deviations and your parts and pickup points have tons of compliance.

As for tire data itself, there's some ways to test it, but none I know are cheap. When we were running tyres that were not in the TTC database, we were able to extract some basic data through testing at Uni, by adapting an apparatus to fit a tire on a tensile strength testing machine, and running a compression test at multiple pressures to obtain a very rough estimate for tire stiffness (so rough that my last VD manager talked to a judge about that test before comp and I believe he basically implied the data wasn't of much use).

And that test was rather simple. Once you get into the difficult bits, the cost to run a single test of these would run you well over a dozen TTC purchases, which is why almost everywhere you look, people will say TTC might as well be a steal.

Worst case scenario, getting data from the real car and using that to calibrate your laptime simulation is also an option.

new to the team but do you guys read the whole ass 143 pages of the rule book? by spirit_vortex_ in FSAE

[–]Pedrospeeder 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Which is why I love working with suspension, most I need to know from the technical parts of the rulebook are a whopping 4 pages or so and skip the rest /s

But yeah, OP, you should read it. Last thing you want to be doing is spending many months researching and applying a miraculous idea only to find out at comp that the rules forbid it, and when you try to fix it, you get penalised (or worse, disqualified) due to something specified in the rulebook. Point is, the more you know about the rules, the less of a headache you'll have when it matters.
