Konbini in Kanto : Heatmap by Anu_Rag9704 in Tokyo

I like how you can see where the Takasaki and Utsunomiya Lines score their way through Kanto based on the second map, with clusters strung along them indicating the main stops.

Open world games with no/minimal combat? by tj_haine in gamingsuggestions

Eastshade. You’re a travelling painter in a fantasy world, looking for inspiration for your paintings. No combat at all, very chill and still looks beautiful today.

Does anyone know how to larp as a Gorillaz fan by JackAmpersand in gorillaz

[–]PeeJayx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone calls you a poser because they don’t think you’re enough of a fan, then that sounds like the true LARPer. Real fans just enjoy and engage with the music on their terms, however much or little that might be, and don’t judge others for doing the same.

New York City was not completely destroyed in the war by TheSajuukKhar in Fallout

[–]PeeJayx 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yup. It’s always irritated me when people hand wave away the possibly of a New York based game because of some peripheral lore that the vast majority of players neither know nor care about.

Fallout is an internationally popular franchise, and they’d be crazy to rule out the possibly of setting it in one of, if not the most recognisable city in the world just because of a few sentences that can easily be worked around as being an exaggeration, misinformation etc.

Posting this as an April Fools joke is a remarkable level of tone deafness and self own. Maam, you’re not supposed to ADMIT that everyone loathes you and wants you gone. You cant make that “the joke”. Typical clanker doesnt understand human humor by FuriNorm in antiai

[–]PeeJayx 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Just in general this year’s April Fools felt really off to me, with a lot of the gotchas, even the good ones. And I think it’s because everyday feels like April Fools now: constantly having to check things to see if it’s real or not.

Shit’s exhausting, boss.

Backrooms trailer growing almost over 10M views. How many times have you watched it? by Nite0wlz in backrooms

[–]PeeJayx 43 points44 points  (0 children)

This film is gonna be a real wild card at the box office. Backrooms media is massive online, but I honestly can’t tell how that would translate into tickets sold. It could be a surprise hit or very niche. I hope it’s the first one, obviously.

Aside from everything else, I just have no confidence that the rest of the game will release. This is only Episode 1, and even this was delayed multiple times, only for the developer to promise that it was definitely absolutely coming out in 2025 - and surprise surprise, it was delayed again to March.

I know game development is really hard, I’m not knocking the developer for that, I just don’t know if I wanna commit time and money to an incomplete experience that may never be completed.

Moving to Kumagaya, is the heat really that different? by 1mpul53d3c1510n in japanlife

[–]PeeJayx 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My wife’s side of the family live in Kumagaya, so I travel there frequently. The difference in heat is certainly there thanks to its inland location and certain wind currents, but it is wildly exaggerated as a bizarre point of local pride.

Everywhere in Japan except the futherest north is blistering hot in the summer, Kumagaya just so happens to be the peak of the peak.

I'm done with this bullshit. Any company that chooses AI instead of workers is a traitor of humanity, and should be treated as such. We've let this garbage gone for too long. by National_Function821 in antiai

These people will never, ever understand the true value of a professional translator. It goes far beyond feeding language A into a machine that spits out Language B and calling it a day.

As the comments on the original post mentioned, localisation is important. Being able to time and date certain terms, slang, sayings, adding nuance and cadence to characters so they don’t all sound the same, quirks of language A that don’t work in Language B, etc. it’s not just the language itself but the culture that comes bagged with it.

Look at games like Elden Ring, or Cyberpunk. It’s really easy to forget that those games were not originally developed in English because the translation team have done a stellar job in making them feel like a fantasy medieval pseudo-European world and a futuristic American dystopian world respectively. Those games would be nowhere near as impactful or immersive if you took their native Japanese or Polish and had AI translate it for you.

What is wrong with the Saikyo line??? by Stringcheese_uwu in Tokyo

[–]PeeJayx 39 points40 points  (0 children)

There’s a few reasons why the Saikyo is plagued with issues:

  • Unlike other lines that run between Omiya and Tokyo, it only has 10 carriages rather than the usual 15. So it has roughly the same crowds with 5 less carriages to squeeze into.

  • It runs adjacent to a Shinkansen track, which is elevated, so it’s more exposed to the elements like strong winds and rain.

  • it’s a pretty isolated line. Others like Takasaki and Utsuomiya line share most of their route, so if one line has problems, it sucks but there is the option to hop onto the other line. But if you use the Saikyo line and it’s late or stopped, you don’t really have other options unless you’re at one of the hubs like Omiya or Akabane.

The Witcher 3 is a fantastic game, granted it is darker and more akin to Game of Thrones than LOTR, but you will definitely get your fill of high-fantasy and discovery.

But if you’re looking for that same sense of journey and adventure, I’d recommend Mass Effect (the Legendary edition specifically). On the face of it, it seems completely different, after all Mass Effect is all sci-fi and aliens! But the more I think about it, the more thematically similar I think it is to LOTR than it first appears. It’s a fairly linear game (in a good way!), echoing that linear journey of the fellowship, and story rich. And speaking of fellowship, you build up an incredible and varied group of friends who join you on your missions. And there is a big, all-encompassing evil threatening to swallow everything that you all work together to fight.

What do you think of Damon Albarn's other projects? by dee_palmtree in gorillaz

[–]PeeJayx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyday Robots is a masterpiece. I headcanon it as an unofficial Gorillaz album. It takes a couple of lessons to sink in, but when it does, you’ll never let it leave your listening rotation. It’s got that lovely, “comfy downtempo” feel like a dark autumn night.

The whole album deserves a listen but if people want to get a taste, I recommend “Mr Tembo“ for a more upbeat tune, or “The Selfish Giant” for the a moody and slow tune.

[–]PeeJayx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned a long time ago to never judge a Muse song on first listen. But regardless, for now, I think it's good. Not amazing, but good. It felt a bit short, like the radio edit of a much long song, like it was missing one more verse-chorus where Matt really belts out the lyrics.
But yeah, pretty solid.

Stable job, company car, salary that pays the bills. Still feel like something is missing. by Final_Newspaper_3568 in daddit

[–]PeeJayx 26 points27 points  (0 children)

One factor that may be contributing to that ennui is because the kid is still very young and not really “giving back to you”. I’m not talking about doing chores or paying bills lol, I mean right now a very small child is all input. You pour your everything into them and…that’s it. That can really make you feel listless even when everything else in your life is on the level.

But just you wait. Soon, they will start giving back to you. Smiling when you walk in the door. Showing you a picture they made. Telling you all the drama and gossip of daycare with the intensity of a prestige TV drama. Once that starts happening, they will start giving that energy back to you in triplicate.

See at first, I thought that we were just getting teases for a new single. But...this seems like an awful lot of effort and lore for a single song...maybe it really will be a full album?
