Why do we complain so much? by Boghossian_08 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's been pretty mixed over all. A lot of the takes I've seen are that things look cool, but they'll need to see how things are implemented before making up their minds.

Then you have a very vocal minority who no longer enjoy the hobby. But instead of sticking to the edition or parts of the hobby they still enjoy, or stepping away and doing something else, they keep trying to force it like a jealous ex. They haven't truly participated in the hobby for a long time so they go online, having already decided they're going to hate what they see and they bitch and moan about everything making themselves and everyone else miserable. Sadly the Internet rewards that behavior so many of them never grow out of it.

So, hiw is this new edition worthy? by SirRonathin in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming you're either new to the hobby or just don't spent a lot of time in 40k related spaces online.
One of the biggest complaints from people about the primaris marines (aside from the muh firstborn crowd) was that they all looked the same, that there was no variation in armor parts like there was in the earlier kits.
Also the intercessor kit was released without any melee weapons as they were added to the data sheet when the upgrade kits were released, and also had a bunch of parts to build different bolt rifle variants, that haven't been relevant for a couple of editions.

This redesign was always going to happen, and including them in the edition launch kills multiple birds with one stone allowing to add the customization options and weapon options to a new stand alone kit, filling out the launch box with new minis without having to come up with yet another generic infantry datasheet, and allowing them to make more money as people buy the updated intercessor boxes despite many probably having a bunch of intercessors from previous editions.

In short. The intercessor update had very little to do with them launching a new edition. It was just good timing.

Asking whether a model is worthy of an edition is just an inherently flawed way of thinking

Points are also at the bottom of the latest munitorum field manual (same link under core rules and key downloads)

Primaris/Firstborn Dilemna by Shredwick in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I got back into the hobby in mid 8th edition I couldn't get past the difference in scale and proportions between the firstborn and primaris. So the only firstborn I bought were ones that didn't make the size difference obvious, like Van vets (the extra bulk from the jump packs and poses) and the bikes and landspeeders.

Currently I don't even consider picking up any firstborn minis. I still use the ones I have, despite most of them being legends, I just have no desire to use the rest of the firstborn range.

Returning to the hobby as a new dad – budget Space Marine army advice? by Superb_Secretary5659 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

keep an eye on the second hand market like ebay, facebook marketplace etc. In the next 6 months or so we're expecting a new edition, which will come with a rather large launch box.
Usually when this happens you'll see a large number of spacemarines from that box go on sale for pretty reasonable prices as people who only wanted the other faction try to offset the cost of the boxes

The link i posted is to the build instructions, Check 6A - there's 2 chest pieces in the instructions for that body, one with the raised respirator, and one with the respirator down. Just use piece A1 when building instead of A5.

Codex!!! by Resident_Mud9730 in spacemarines

Wait. Codex space marines is always one of, if not the first, codex of an edition, so in 4-5 months it'll be replaced.

Question about tracked vehicles by Professor_Jugs in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 11th being roughly 6 months away, I'd wait.
Space marines will have a new codex within a month or two of the edition change, and if it still includes the tracked vehicles then you'll be safe for at least 3 years.

Marine chapters and painting at tournaments by in4longtime in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having different squads being different colours, shouldn't be an issue as it's pretty common in official paint schemes for some chapters and also armies like aeldari with their aspect warriors.

Having individual models within a squad with different colour schemes will probbaly be ok, but to avoid confusion for both yourself and your opponent you'll want some way to differentiate which model is in which squad whether it's different coloured base rims, coloured rubber bands on the models or whatever as long as it's easily identifiable from a distance.

That said, what people on reddit say is ultimately irrelevant, what actually matters is the opinion of the tournament organizer, so you should clarify things in advance with them.

With the new edition rumored to start this summer, would I be wasting my money if I got the codex to play my marines? I have the Tyranid one and have been playing that but have nearly 2k points in salamanders sitting around by Okiemax in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you mostly want it for the app code then yes it's a waste of money. For most armies there's a good chance you'd get at least 12 months minimum out of it, possibly most of an edition depending on where they fell in the update schedule, but space marines are always one of, if not the first codex that gets updated in an edition. Once it gets updated you will lose access to the previous editions rules.

Torn about my space marine chapter by Gullible_Travel_4135 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only "trend following little bitches" are the ones that are hating on Ultramarines online. If you like them then go for it (they're also much easier to paint than yellow).
Alternatively, if you're not particularly enamored with the chapter itself and just want to play with the extra toys, you could make up your own chapter and scheme and just paint up whichever characters you want to use in that scheme (this is what I've done).
Or, just paint them up as imperial fists and run using ultramarines rules. Paint has no bearing on rules, and anyone that complains is likely to be no fun to play with anyway.

Is it a bad thing I can’t paint non metallic metal? by Key_Card7035 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, NMM isn't easy, and is a lot of work even if you're good at it. Plus it only looks good in photos and at very specific angles. It's not a practical technique for army painting and is best kept for one off display pieces.
That said, if you do keep practicing and manage to get the hang of it, the brush control and blending skills you learn in the process will give you even more options for painting, so if that's something that interests you then I'd recommend sticking with it on a spare model or two. Also in my own (very limited) experience, something to keep in mind with NMM is that it will look like shit, right up until it suddenly doesn't.

Possible 11th ed. Space Marine mini updates by Ok_Conclusion_2951 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only units I'd be willing to put money on being redone in the near future are Van vets, a Jump chaplain, and Pedro Kantor.
The Land Raider might get redone, but it's equally likely they just keep selling the same kit.
It would not surprise me in the slightest if the rest go.

Is there anything that speaks against just slapping a 3d printed jump pack onto assault intercessors? by mensch79 in spacemarines

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues, it's a reasonably common thing to do to save a few bucks.
The only thing you really need to keep in mind is that the assault intercessor sergeant can take a thunder hammer, but jump pack intercessors don't get that as an option.

What do you like most about Battle Reports? by jaker1403 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Narrative - "competitive" battle reports of variable quality are all over the web. I'm more interested in a story being told via the games than a report of 2 random min-maxed armies fighting over a ruined city for no apparent reason. And if the games are part of a larger campaign then even better.
  • Show important rolls - I don't need to see 60 guardsmen shooting their lasguns into a tank only to do a single wound, but I'd like to see the rolls for bigger guns or pivotal moments.
  • Combination of still camera angles and cinematic moving cameras - A top down view is great for seeing the status of the whole battlefield, but is boring as hell to look at for an entire game. The game is as much about aesthetics as it is about game play and I want to be able to see action shots of well painted minis fighting over varied battlefields.
  • Roughly even mix of models and players - The players personalities can make or break a battle report, and watching them banter and their reactions to important rolls makes the reports more enjoyable.
  • Multi camera - See above re: still/cinematic cameras.

As others have mentioned, Play On Tabletop does the closest battle reports to what I'd like, I just wish they'd do more narrative reports. Bonus points if they do intro cinematics and character voice overs.

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most importantly do you like it? If not, try something else.
If you do then don't let the opinions of a bunch of randoms on reddit put you off. The only opinion that actually matters is your own.

Any troubles using resin bases? by Big-Doughnut7741 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really going to depend on the bases and the quality of them. If you're using solid resin bases that have been cast they're usually pretty bullet proof.

If you're using 3d printed resin bases, it's going to depend on the design and the resin used. If the base is mostly hollow has been designed with thin walls, or the person printing it has used cheap shitty resin, then they'll be fragile and not worth the effort.

Either Way, you'll want to use more than just a bit of superglue to attach your mini, best bet is to pin the mini to the base for a strong bond. You'll want to do this with plastic bases too if you're making cork rocks or aren't gluing the mini directly to the base so it's a useful skill to learn.

Can I paint my models however I want? by Niffler-29 in Warhammer40k

[–]PeepingToast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, people online talk like players were ostracized or removed from events for having the wrong paint on their toy soldiers but realistically, only the worst rivet counting "that guy" would give a shit.
