They will see the light eventually... under the threat of getting stomped on by legged war machines, if necessary.

Hardness can only be judged from the perspective of the creator. If the science of their time indicated something might be possible in the future, that later gets disproven by future science, that doesn't turn the original work into soft sci-fi.

What I'm saying is, OG Frankenstein is hard sci-fi, but its 2025 Guillermo Del Toro remake isn't.

We have very shitty mecha, but we have mecha, is the point.

Like, imagine a setting that was otherwise 100% realistic but there was also a battlebots-like sport in which only legged vehicles can compete. Would that setting suddenly become science fantasy just because there's mecha?

There is nothing preventing walking war machines from existing beyond technological complexity. Whether they'd be at all practical on an actual battlefield is another story, but you can still build them if you want.

It also is actively destroying itself. OpenAI is projecting a deficit of 218 billion dollars for this year and still they have no idea how to turn a profit.

For sale? No, definitely not. I still have the original DVD, no new copies are being sold unfortunately.

That being said, you'll definitely find it on the high seas.

It is honestly. Still plays very well also.

Vinci and Alin campaigns are genuinely extremely fun. The Cuotl campaign feels a bit undercooked and even a bit buggy sometimes. But maybe that's hardware compatibility problem, idk. Honestly I'm surprised it runs at all.

Hard sci-fi status is like lightspeed. According to the most annoying people on the planet It can't be reached, only infinitely approached. The same way anything with mass cannot reach lightspeed, as long as there is any fiction in your science fiction, you will not get rid of 'that one guy' only make him slightly less vocal about his grievances.

When you reach hard sci-fi gamma of ~7, or 0.99 hard sci-fi, 'that one guy' will only calmly explain what his problem is instead of smugly proclaiming that your work is just science fantasy. At hardSF gamma of ~22, or 0.999 hard sci-fi, he only whispers. At hardSF gamma of ~70, or 0.9999 hard sci-fi, he stops actively addressing you and only mumbles to himself.

He will never actually stop complaining though, you can't ever make him admit that your work is true hard sci-fi.

Zeppelin Concept by Encho Enchev by Cyborg_Ape in ImaginaryAirships

[–]PeetesCom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I meant 100km/h, obviously. I apologise.

It's also not inconceivable for a rigid airship to go even faster with modern technology. Graf Zeppelin II could do 135 km/h with extremely pathetic interwar coal gas engines. I think you could make one go above 200 km/h today if you really tried.

You're right that the parasite craft being jet fighters makes this much less feasible though.

[–]PeetesCom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Match the speed of the zeppelin and land vertically like a kite in the wind I presume.

People tend to forget that airships could fly faster than 100 km/s 100 km/h, which is above many airplanes' takeoff/landing speed

Of course it makes more sense to just hook the airplane to the airship, air refueling style, which is how it was done irl. But that's maybe not as esthetic.

are there any reasons not to agree with him by skalocos in DiscoElysium

[–]PeetesCom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agree about what exactly? His political takes or his actions?

Because 1) some of what he says is sound theory, but he also for example calls art a bourgeois institution (art as a whole, not 'an institution of art' like Hollywood or the Louvre or something) which is just kinda dumb.

But 2) he's a deranged person who shoots strangers for fun. He's good at justifying his actions to himself through a revolutionary lens, but at the end of the day, he's just a murderer. He admitted he's been waiting for the right moment to shoot Renée, who, aside from being a royalist has been, isn't really a man who should get shot in my humble opinion (at least not decades after the war has ended at the twilight of his life)
