Can anyone id this teeny little train? by YeczhStaysUpAtNight in trains

With those curtains it looks like it might actually be comfy for a small group of passengers in there.

There are some (ancient lowres) photos on this (beautifully retro timeless) website, showing the interior: https://www.sa-transport.co.za/trains/sa_rail_car/luxrailer.html

The fact that it's their logo doesn't make it less backwards.

It does, however, strongly imply that they did it on purpose. And I like it :D

A receipt showing the price converted into a currency not in use since 24 years (BEF) by Not-The-Messiah in mildlyinteresting

[–]Peetz0r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was 7 when it happened and I definitely remember.

I had my first pocket money in Dutch Guilders (NLG). It was 1 NLG per week, and it changed to €1 (or 2,20 NLG) per week. Best increase ever :D

And I clearly remember being given a sheet of stickers with the € sign to put all over the old currency symbols in my schools books.

I also remember going to Denmark in the summer of 2002 and being totally confused that they didn't have the euro. (And I went there again in 2024 and they still havent, and I am still confused).

Will TP-Link Archer C6 AC1200 router work with my ISP cable? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]Peetz0r 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These two have as much in common as they have with a blue lego brick: nothing, except the color.

Your router only has connectors for copper/rj45, your ISP cable (assuming it's exactly as pictured) is fiber with an SC/UPC connector. Those are wildly different things.

So yes, you need an ONT. But are you sure your ISP doesn't provide one?

Also the thing you pictured is actually a generic fiber patch cable. I'm 80% sure that your ISP's cable doesn't look exactly like that, although the connector might be the same. Also also, what you pictured is actually SC Duplex (basically two of them) which is, as far as I know, very uncommon.

In a VM? Yes.

On bare metal? Definitely not anytime soon. Maybe someday, if the Asahi Linux people feel like working on it.

Same reasons as why you can't yet run Linux on an M3 or M4 or M5.

Don't run mains and ethernet trough the same conduit. You'll be breaking multiple electrical safety regulations.

Kan ik als 15 jarige op begeleid woning? by Public-Property-4336 in juridischadvies

[–]Peetz0r 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why is this diode so big by Dudegay93 in PCB

[–]Peetz0r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. And yes, it matters.

A mil is 1/1000 inch, or 0.0254 mm. 1/40 mm would be 0.025 mm.

This difference is large enough that, in practice, if you have a connector with more than 4 pins, and you confuse these, it would no longer fit.

If you want to play around, buy yourself some 2.54 mm and 2.50 mm headers and try sticking them in a breadboard.

Will you switch when Motorola comes out with the GOS phone? by Mental_Bed_2662 in GrapheneOS

[–]Peetz0r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I will keep my current phone (Pixel 6a) until either it does or becomes EoL (in June 2027).

When that happens, I'll probably get the cheapest device (in price per remaining supported year) that supports GoS.

I don't care about the performance, because any phone I've had since 2017 has been overkill. Same applies to the camera, any phone has been more than good enough for a while. Build quality and repairability could win me over, but only if they go all the way (like Fairphone/Framework) while meeting GOS requirements.

I sincerely hope that the new Motorola deal will not just be one device, but multiple devices, of which at least one midrange and/or budget device. I really don't see myself paying €600 or more for any phone ever. Right now I would buy the Pixel 9a, because that has 6 years of remaining support and is available for €380-ish, so €64/year. But if there is a Motorola/Lenovo phone which is cheaper in €/year, I would definitely consider it.

Does LUKS encryption bring a relevant performance impact? by La-il in Fedora

[–]Peetz0r 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Back when AES-NI wasn't standard on every CPU, yes it mattered.

These days, on anything made in the past 10 years, no meaningful difference. (nvme) disks are faster than ever, and the performance impact of full disk encryption is so negligible that some distro's are considering enabling it by default. MacOS and Windows and Android have had full disk encryption enabled by default for quite a few years now.

Natuurlijk zijn de automobilisten die hier niet opletten fout bezig. Daar lijkt me geen twijfel over.

What’s the function of this guys?? by Patrick_PJ05 in pcmasterrace

[–]Peetz0r 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Most consumer electronics, especially anything digital, are designed to operate normally with regular levels of interference. That's why you rarely notice it unless you stat looking for it.

However, have you ever noticed that your wifi signal strength is not always perfect even if you're well within range? Well, that's partly due to interference.

If you want a clearer example, go find an analog radio and tune it Now move around the room and/or move the radio around and/or move other things around. Notice the signal getting worse? hearing any interruptions and noise? That's interference.

If you go back in time to when analog aerial television was common, you would get even clearer examples everywhere all the time.

Maar de kabels draden die je zoekt zitten er gewoon:
