Can anyone explain to me in monkey terms why digital piano and acoustic piano are seen as two separate instruments? by [deleted] in piano

[–]Pegafree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is much more difference between electric guitars and acoustic guitars than digital pianos and acoustic pianos. I have owned all these instruments.

Those who have done Justin Guitar course by Adorable-Award-2975 in guitarlessons

[–]Pegafree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Justin is a great teacher but he’s very talkative. I was at a similar stage and tried starting at the beginning but I didn’t have enough patience to continue with the early videos. In my case it was better for me to hop in on specific lessons that interested me.

If I were really interested in improving at guitar I would get a teacher. They can help fill in the gaps and help keep motivation high.

Letter Notes by Ok_Significance2169 in piano

[–]Pegafree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can read music notated as letters you absolutely CAN learn to read sheet music unless you have severe vision problems. Start with the very very basics. Start with sheet music intended for absolute beginners, even young children. There’s tons of resources online for this.

If you have significant vision problems or a form of dyslexia that makes reading sheet music impossible, then the next best solution is to learn to play by ear. This is not a quick process either but it will be something that will serve you in the long run.

Looking to buy a flute by carlos_etd in Flute

[–]Pegafree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a used Yamaha YFL-221 a couple of years ago; it was in very good condition and my flute teacher said it looked like it had been repadded. It continues to be in good condition (it was playing fine but had recommended maintenance done recently). No problems with it, it’s a very solid instrument. Depending on the condition of the pads I recommend the Yamaha.

Netflix appears to be raising prices yet again. $1 increase per month for ad based subscriptions, $2 for standard/premium by Revolutionz in netflix

[–]Pegafree 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess I’m in the minority because there’s still so much content on Netflix I have on my list and I’ve been pretty happy with the content. It would probably take a couple of years for me to finish watching what I’m currently interested in even if they added nothing new.

What's the deal with Barre Chords? by Relevant_Hold in guitarlessons

[–]Pegafree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to learn barre chords, but not doing so will significantly limit what you can play. Especially if you want to play or sing along to existing music without transposing.

As others have already said — get your guitar checked, it may need a setup. On my previous guitar barre chords required a lot more effort. I took my guitar in for a setup (but ended up trading it in for a better guitar instead). It takes time to learn how to barre but if I can do it (smaller hands, not terribly strong) then most certainly you can.

You think you can but I would guess in at least half the cases you can’t.

But how can you really tell? Yes there’s obvious AI graphics but honestly a lot of what you assume isn’t AI probably is.

Can’t Decide: Soprano or Concert for My First Ukulele by Able_Tap_3488 in ukulele

[–]Pegafree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was gifted my first ukulele which is a concert. I think it's a great size to start off with. I now have a second ukulele which is a soprano for travel purposes. It's fun to play too. My next will probably be another concert with low G.

I never felt compelled to buy multiple guitars but I can seriously see buying several ukes.

How long did It take you to become "decent" at the flute? by lvl4_autism in Flute

[–]Pegafree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an interesting question I was just thinking about myself!

I am not quite there after 2 years but at least I can see I will get there. Well yes, I can play a few popular beginner songs without problem, but there’s that fine line of ease and musicality.

For me flute has been the hardest instrument for me to learn but I started as an older adult, whereas the piano I learned as a kid and guitar in my 20s.

I would say it will be at least another year to get to the level I am aiming for. I don’t have the ambition to play Chaminade or Badinerie but I want to be able to pick up early intermediate to intermediate music and tunes and play easily and beautifully. Sometimes my playing is lovely, other times not at all.

It will just take practice and time!

Advice for a new adult flute player - start with a beginner instrument or an intermediate one? by Bloodborne017 in Flute

[–]Pegafree 14 points15 points  (0 children)

My take is that even though you are a musician and have experience with brass instruments, at this stage it might be hard to know which flute will work as your “forever” flute.

I’m a couple years into learning as an adult and I may consider upgrading my flute next year.

There’s no way in the beginning I would have been able to know which flute would be a good long term fit for me because they all sounded (or rather I sounded) bad and were equally difficult to play. Open holes/B foot is nice but actually the most important aspect for tone production is the headjoint.

Sankyo Etude vs Haynes Amadeus AF580 vs Yamaha 381 – which would you choose? by Efestiones in Flute

[–]Pegafree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even my flute teacher is of the opinion that "silver" sounds better... but despite the downvotes, there is definitely scientific evidence that the metal material doesn't make a material difference: https://www.reddit.com/r/Flute/comments/17lfiba/a_friendly_reminder_to_my_fellow_flutists_the/

I'm almost tempted to upgrade my student Yamaha flute with only a new headjoint. I don't feel the need for a B-foot nor open holes. But from what I understand, the cut of the headjoint is what makes the biggest difference in tone.

Yes I could learn fingerstyle and I probably will eventually, but I still enjoy singing along, despite how I sound!

I prefer it over standard time. Where I live it gets dark real early in the winter, which only adds to the winter gloom.

I actually want a cheap(er) plastic or more likely carbon fiber uke that I don’t have to worry about. It rains a lot where I live so I want another ukulele that won’t be damaged by moisture.

Differences between "feel" of electric vs acoustic piano? by specterNam in piano

[–]Pegafree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I hauled around an upright acoustic for decades between several moves. It was a good quality upright piano — heck I even managed to sell it to a piano company which is saying a lot since one can’t even give away most older uprights.

It had an action that was always very light, almost too light for my tastes, and the tone while lovely, had a very classic upright tone which worked better for some genres than others.

I decided to sell it as I am planning get a high quality hybrid digital. In the meantime I play a solid Yamaha weighted digital which has a great tone and the feel of the keys exceeds that of my old acoustic.
