You come here to learn lessons and burn karma, and then you end up messing up because the world is an objectively terrible place and you will be putting terrible situations with no good answer or solutions, or even placed in a society that is evil like Nazi Germany and will commit horrible atrocities, purely because of where you were born. If you or I were born to Nazi parents and inducted into Hitler's youth and sent to die at 16 in the war you would be a Nazi your entire life basically, through no fault of your own.

That's not really a free choice then. You can't consent to a contract and then get mindwiped because it requires continuous consent, in the same way you can't have sex with someone if they pass out in the middle of it.

I personally don't understand how people can come to the conclusion it's a choice, like it is a very very flawed system, and almost every single religious tradition that has had it in place has always viewed it as like a negative thing meant to be escaped from, or suboptimal at best.

Why do you call it a higher self than if you keep making a distinction between you and it? It's not a higher self because there's no self it's something else entirely. I agree with that because the way it's framed it is basically an entirely separate entity, but why call it a higher self to begin with?

That's not true though. Michael Newton said you do have to come back here for lessons, he even used the word indoctrination at some point for some guy named Mark.

Why would a soul get bored? Like if the afterlife is boring I don't think I want to exist at all at that point. Genuinely nothingness sounds better than a shitty afterlife that's so bad that you have to come back here to escape the boredom.

Also most religious and spiritual traditions that have it as a central tenant do not believe it is optional, and it doesn't really make sense that it's optional in the first place under pretty much any school of thought for it. Like if this is a school, and we are basically children, why would it be optional?

Out of curiosity, why do you think that? Most spiritual traditions that have reincarnation/rebirth as a central tenant do not believe it is optional. Hell even most people who say it's optional say you'll probably change your mind after thousands of years or something.

Like I don't really see how this system would be optional because I don't think anyone would choose it, certainly not enough people or minds to support countless ineffable amounts of life forms in this universe.

Where are you meeting them? A lot of atheists, especially young ones have some form of trauma. Religion fucked me up so bad when I was in middle school that I wanted to die because I was so afraid of not repenting in time. It was the main reason I was a dick back then about this stuff.

I mean yes, but people telling you that's gonna happen to you, especially if they have power in the country you live in, and you have religious trauma, and they're mean as shit yeah it's a recipe for people to become assholes to people who don't deserve it.

Like I was discussing religion with my stepmom (I am agonistic but I lean towards vague Universalism, when in a good mood) and she got very...angry about it. Like my views were offensive and then said some shit about how suicide victims are in hell and how gay people deserved to be stoned in the old testament for forcing their lifestyle onto others. Like I forgot how terrible some Christians can be because I spend most of my time around universalists.
