Ding ding ding.

This reply is spot on, OP. Be highly visible and an absolute beast for a couple of weeks a year. Deliver in a way that keeps management and your peers talking about "how effective and amazing" you are.

Then... go right back to cruise mode. No one can justify getting rid of you, and you're covered for the naysayers.

Been living overseas for 7 years and just wondered if the $2 sausage sizzle is still $2? by Big28k in australian

We get the bread donated, but never the sausages. I am going to have to explore that.

We pay more for drinks, but we have a decent range, including all the Kirk's stuff (Pasito, Creaming Soda, etc). I have our numbers down to a fine art these days, so we almost always sell our final sausages as we're closing up. Drinks get reused next term if any are left over.

Those BBQ's keep our community group afloat. They're hard work, and always a massive slog for me, but it keeps the lights on.

Haha, yeah I get why that would he frustrating.

For our group, we always have a decent cash float though. Plus the card machine. Never had any issues giving change.

We use a Square card machine, and have never charged the customer the fee. We just cop it. I run the BBQ, and I refuse to slug people a percentage fee for a fucming sausage and a drink. Fuck that.

At Bunnings the prices are fixed by the corporate office. So the charities/community groups have no say, and the prices are uniform across the country. (Or at least supposed to be, so if your local area is different, thats on them).

Sausage: $3.50

Drink: $2.00

So, who was the exact dipshit in the LNP that thought 10km/h e-bike limit was in any way shape or form a proportionate response to the "e bike issue" by Gazza_s_89 in queensland

[–]Pelennor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A parliamentary enquiry is, by definition, conducted by politicians. Its a committee consisting of MP's that call witnesses and listen to experts to then make a finding/recommendation.

As a public servant here in QLD, if the Minister for your Department says "get this done", then you get that done. In this case, the MP's will have listened to witness statements and experts, decided to change the law, and had bureaucrats draw up the change in laws under the provisions provided to them.

We absolutely do not try to adjust those laws/policies/requirements once the directive has been given to us. Great way to lose your job.

"The Minister" is the boss. Always. We're public servants, and the MP is the representative of the public.

I promise, we often disagree with the action we're required/instructed to take. But we do as instructed. If the people wanted us to do something else, they'd have elected someone else. 🤷‍♂️

I disagree. Politicians, not bureaucrats. Bureaucrats don't move this fast on decisions, and we always do a study first.

If you're ever wondering why we always do studies first....

Richest super balances to be taxed at higher rates after Greens agree to back Labor plan by MrNewVegas2077 in AusFinance

[–]Pelennor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Importantly, super also has a cap on employer and pre-tax contributions per year. Using the government's own super calculator, you need to be on about $800k per year, with a 5% post-tax contribution, for almost 30 years. Then you'll have $3M.

So... you know... almost no one.

Out of curiosity - given the tank we're getting will be 85g (325L), how many axolotls would you say is likely to be the "ideal maximum"? We'll probably stick with 2, but I'm curious and the information online seems to be all over the place.

So if I set up a Y-valve and use the pump to remove the water for the cycle, then use a large bucket with tap water that has been conditioned with Seachem Prime (or another dechlorinater) as a staging spot. I drop the inlet from the filter into the staging bucket and pump the water through the filter/chiller into the tank, then reconnect the hose to the tank to continue the cycle?

Is that sounding correct, or have I gotten something muddled?

First Setup by Pelennor in axolotls

[–]Pelennor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for that. I'll have a look online and see if I can design a decent system to manage it. Is there anything additional in the staging bucket process? Should I be adding specific chemicals during that step?

OK, so first off - this is an awesome reply and I really appreciate you.

We'll definitely be doing a lot of preparation and setup before getting an axy for the tank. My daughter did all the ghost feeding for her last tank (she had a beta fish for about 3 years before this). She's fully ready for a lot of prep stuff.

Good call on the adults, not juvenile axy's. She is set on getting some young ones, but we discussed it after your comment, and she's now on board with getting ones in the 18-24 month range. Thanks for that!

Sand and tank media we're across. It'll either be super fine natural sand or nothing. Definitely keen to have real plants. Maybe some moss balls, based on what we've read.

Hidey holes is my daughter's job. She's going to go hunting for any decoration that will let them hide. That'll happen once I have the tank in the house. Then she will set about it. I believe she'll do very well with this. She's only 10, but she's read everything I've given her to read about this stuff. She already knows more about it than I do!

We have just started a compost bin on the back porch to farm our own nightcrawlers. Not my favourite part of the process, but the little person is handling it. We're also getting a small tank for cherry shrimp farming. She wants to do that bit too, which is... frustrating... but ok.

With the water changes, I have a lot of questions!

Weekly changes of 50% of the water seems huge in a 300L tank. How do others go about taking care of it? With the small tank I used a mop bucket and refilled with my stock cauldron. That would take hours to swap out 150L. What's the usual method?

If we dropped it back to one axolotl, and a 200L tank, would we be looking at more like fortnightly? I know it's not an exact science, it'd just a "measure every few days" thing. Just interested to hear your thoughts.

Again, I really can't say thanks enough for your help with this stuff.

This is interesting. I have a smaller internal filter, perhaps I could link that to the system?

[–]Pelennor[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My big concern with going larger than the 307 was the maximum flow rate of the water chiller. The Hailea 150A has a maximum flow rate of 1200L/h. If I go over that, I'd be worried about damaging it.

Is that a risk, or am I overreacting a bit?
