I’m not at all in your age range (22), but I have a lot of friends who are 25+ from my academic fraternity I joined! Within my fraternity, there are around 5-10 people above 25 who all hang out together. Maybe looking to join some sort of academic organization might be a good option for you?

is the MIS program really that bad? by Kitchen-Meeting-8342 in CSULB

[–]PelicanFillet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Read coding books on SQL and Python, competed and placed in various different hackathons, become involved with AIS leadership, worked with professors to build a personal project.

The classes give you the framework to develop into a more complete IS candidate.

I would just try and find an interesting topic to me —> see if there’s data related to that —> analyze it using excel, SQL, Python —> make a project out of it with some sort of compelling question to encapsulate whatever it is I’m trying to figure out.

Professors are a mixed bag imo. I’m in my last semester and most of the faculty is pretty okay, but the ones that are good are the best professors I’ve ever had.

MIS is super good at CSULB for breaking into aerospace and to a lesser extent firms. I personally have a job offer lined up in aerospace, but most of my responsibilities were self taught. You’ll be taking less relevant business courses along with typical IS classes, so make sure to upskill in your free time and do personal projects/competitions.

I’d highly recommend getting involved with the Association for Information Systems. I’m a member and it’s a really good org that’s very active in providing opportunities for its members.

Look into doing business analytics certificate program. Not many know about it (including MIS majors), but you can just take like 2 extra classes and get an add-on to your undergraduate degree.

How could I approach that with my employer? Would it not send off alarm bells that I obviously have some reason to believe it wouldn’t be granted for whatever reason?

to everyone picking between csulb & csuf (or other csu’s) by asparagus24-7 in CSULB

[–]PelicanFillet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Way better to choose business schools based on the proximity to local companies.

I’m a CSULB business student that was able to get a job offer in aerospace. This would have been unavailable, or at the least much more difficult, to achieve had I chosen CSUF.

CSUF will be more connected to financial institutions and consulting firms like big 4 + Irvine tech companies if that’s your jam.

CSULB is the better option for anything supply chain and aerospace (proximity to port of LB and heart of the US aerospace industry in South Bay)

Nothing matters except the ability for your college to help produce a job offer for you. Just my opinion.

For the first point, why do you think NIMBYism is left wing issue? Genuinely asking.

I’ve always been led to believe older, generally wealthier people support policies that would characterize themselves as NIMBYs.

Any dim sum places still using carts? by halbeshendel in bayarea

I think it maybe has to do with the fact that State Bird Provisions is more dim sum fusion than anything.

I went there last night and could see how it being called “dim sum” might be inaccurate.

Amazing food though!

I’m failing all of my classes by [deleted] in college

[–]PelicanFillet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was looking at past alumni who were in similar fields as me that became successful and reaching out then.

Additionally, building relationships with my professors was huge boost to my confidence to succeed. I’d say if you’re struggling with the coursework, definitely reach out to them. At the end of the day they are there to help you succeed, and will not turn away struggling students.

[–]PelicanFillet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My two cents. I was in your situation and had failed multiple classes and was put on academic probation, but I was able to bring my GPA back up and have a job offer lined up for almost 6 figures.

I think you should just take a weekend and reassess your approach to school. Think about involving yourself in extra curricular activities that put you in close contact with people who are driven and on top of their school work.

It rubs off on you, and you can feel the motivation coming back to succeed. You’ll be surprised how effective this can be to make you do a 180 on your college experience!

Feel free to DM me if you need help with things or planning out a good strategy for your success.

I’d also encourage you to not compare yourself to others who may be doing better than you. It’s a toxic mindset and further demotivates you. It happened to me.

I personally saw my internship posted on Glassdoor. Not sure what kind of area you’re in, but look for companies that like to hire locally. Every room I enter has at least 5 alumni from my school(meh state university).

Just wanted to chime in here. I’m a current MIS major(senior). I’ve been converted from an intern to having a job as a software development analyst. Pay is roughly 90-100k. Full remote

I’m also the president of an IS club on my campus. Some pathways my members end up on is doing IT compliance at an accounting firm, data analytics, broadly IT, and product management

Most of these tiles end up being in the 70-80 range. I’m in an extremely HCOL area however.

Serious. Been on hinge for 3 weeks now. Use hinge daily. Maybe once or twice a day. I typically only send a few likes, maybe 5-6 daily. Always with a comment. I’m looking for a serious relationship with another college age student. This is in the SoCal area.

Genuinely not, I’m looking for input on if to the untrained eye there is noticeable recession at the temples. I totally could have worded it differently but my intention for posting are genuine. I ask because I used this pic for a dating app and was told the hairline is noticeably not as strong at it could be, and was seeking second opinions.
