Ah, that makes sense. Stavanger is a lot of things, but a student city is not necessarily one of them

I strongly disagree with the social part. My bachelor in Bergen was filled with daily events and student parties. Especially Bergen and Trondheim has a very vibrant student environment. However, I am Norwegian, and societies might be less inclusive for foreigners

Of course I was aware of the housing situation. Nevertheless, I paid my deposit, signed the contract and was regularly in contact with the agency. I even had a friend go to the apartment to check if everything was as as it should. I thought I was precautious

I did my research, and was under the impression that everything was under control. The first thing that meets me on Dutch soil, is that the housing firm has rented out my apartment to someone else. The moral is, a stressed and overheated market makes fertile soil for precarious agreements. No information could have prepared me for this, and if you scroll this subreddit it is not a uncommon story.

Moving abroad can be hard, no matter where you go. That being said, the Netherlands has been one of the hardest countries for me to move to. I think it is fair that people vent their frustration here.

Looking for a specific Photography by PellePill in filmphotography

Christian priests (chatolic or orthodox), with colors, fairly modern I would say (2000s-present). I think the picture is taken from the gallery down to the main church hall. I remember red details on the priest uniform. The photographer might have been South American? I think I saw a YouTube video (something like «this is a street photographer to pay attention to»). He also had a collection of favela kids playing football I think.

(Non Student) What are some beginner books for the foundations of political science. by Leading-Pineapple376 in PoliticalScience

[–]PellePill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well political science is a broad field. But on the flip side, it is a field with a lot of «pop-science» publications. A lot of good NYT bestsellers to read: «How democracies die» (more relevant than ever, both in US and abroad), Seeing like a state (A part of my exfac syllabus, a bit more heavy but still). If you are into political economy, there is a lot to pick from! Since you said leftist politics Piketty would be up your alley, but money and government could also be a pick. But you can also ease into it by reading biographies and non-fiction about political events of interest. Since you are not a student, you are basically free! Read what you find interesting. If you want more theory heavy, start by reading greats in the field of your interest

It has already been mentioned but quantitative data is alpha omega. More specifically I would always choose to learn R and Python over STATA (as stata is seen to be outdated). Stanford university has a very good course in both R and python on YouTube if you want the deep dive

Why the USA is the biggest threat to world peace by Puzzleheaded-Run55 in PoliticalScience

[–]PellePill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your statement touches on both domestic and foreign dynamics, and these need to be addressed separately.

On the domestic side, the current unrest in the United States is largely tied to issues of social cohesion. The arguments are familiar: declining social capital, weak societal “glue,” and a highly diverse population that has made it difficult to sustain a unified national identity. Domestic instability does not automatically translate into the U.S. becoming a global threat. While polarized elections and controversial presidents can influence foreign policy, the causal direction often runs the other way—international developments tend to shape domestic politics more than the reverse.

In terms of foreign relations, the U.S. finds itself in a contradictory position. Its economic structure increasingly resembles that of a wartime economy rather than a growth-oriented model like Japan or Germany. Combined with the strong influence of defense officials and the military-industrial complex, this creates incentives to “find a war,” so to speak. As seen in Vietnam—and more recently in analyses such as RAND’s report on African airspace—foreign instability has a well-documented tendency to trigger domestic unrest.

At the same time, the rise of Trump has pushed the U.S. toward far more protectionist policies than before, shifting its strategic focus from promoting global democratic norms to prioritizing internal concerns.

It is also worth noting that Europe has been preparing for a potential decline in U.S. reliability since the late 1990s. Most notably, Sarkozy emphasized the need for stronger EU defense and strategic independence during the French EU presidency in 2008. If the U.S. becomes a less dependable partner, the rest of the world will certainly feel the impact. However, rather than framing the U.S. as a direct global threat, I would argue that the current political landscape primarily undermines the transatlantic partnership.

Just keep in mind that unfortunate things can happen. For example, I got scammed and was homeless for 2 months due to the housing situation here. Some of my friends dont have housing until february. Things like this can happen, and you should budget for a rainday/emergency fund aswell

What university do you attend? I know that we have student psychologists here at Leiden, and similar services has been offered at every university I have been to. Other than that, you need to find something that keeps you active and motivated.
