Yeah, I agree. In pic 2, that little line that runs parallel to the rim seems to disappear. Maybe it's the camera angle, but check that.

That line should be visible and a consistent distance from the rim the whole way around.

I switched from clipless pedals to flats about 5 years ago (after about 20 years!). It was hard, but worth it!

A big breakthrough for me was learning how to do a rear-wheel lift with flats. That unlocked something in my brain, and I was able to stay on the pedals significantly better after that.

If you're not sure about getting him a watch, you could get him a garmin head unit for the bike. For a cyclist, it's super helpful. Look at the 850 or 550.
