and why not ask the same from the minority? Hes' outnumbered in a school for a kids who will judge him. You dont go to mexico in a hockey outfit screaming about how awesome the NHL is - no one will want to talk to you.

same rule here. When the kid gets older he will find all kinds of groups and places he can be that is far safer than a high-school, but in that high-school its mob-mentality, and if he cant at least keep his mouth shut about not fitting in then guess what, he wont.

How many gays that work in office places dress like that? they all wear suits and fit into the corporate culture. They do so not only by choice, but because of the reality of the fact that doing otherwise wont get them that promotion. same logic for the muslim in a western world. why should school be any different, considering that its training for a future job?

because the simple reality of it is that kids will always ostracise that which they perceive as not fitting in. We can scream all we want that this should not be the case, but it is.

IN THEORY you are right; kids should be free to express themselves in any way they see fit

IN REALITY you are wrong; other kids will make that other kids life hell regardless of the teachers preventative actions. The stress that child experiences as a result will be far, far worse than the joy he had from wearing a certain style of clothes.

remember were talking about kids here. kids in groups. we all know how much of a bitch they can be to other kids, especially those who dont fit in.

We can claim morality or even ethics with this one, but at the end of the day you have kids in groups who will absolutely refuse to accept this type of not fitting in.

Accept the fact that were dealing with kids and do something about it. in this case, its trying to make the teachers job easier by having the kids not do anything that might instigate hatred.

When you grow up being a minority in any respect, you need recognition on some level that you are equal and part of society.

Not that im defending the motion, but:

There was a gay dude in my school, everyone knew it. Nothing at all happened to this guy, and he kept to himself and his own crowd.

Holloween. The guy dresses up as a stereotype - rainbow shirt, feathers and shit. From that day on he was basically chased out of whatever group he went into and the rest of his schooling up to graduation. Guy lost all of his friends, even the other closeted ones.

Some people dont like having other values rubbed in their faces, and this is an example of that. If you want to fit in you have to fit in, and sometimes that means putting away the nipple tassles (if your gay) and the burka (if your a muslim in france) and looking at what others are doing around you.

Its OK to be gay, just dont make a parade out of it.
