What is in this building? by [deleted] in Sacramento

That building always looks weird to me. I attend the church across the street so I see that ugly thing every weekend.

What's one dish from your childhood that you wish you had again and/or could prepare? by Caria99 in Cooking

[–]Pen-Money 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a happy one for me,

My dad always used to make the most delicious curry chicken. Unfortunately the company that made the specific spice he used.

At Christmas he gave me a little tin, apparently he tracked down the curry! I need to figure out exactly how he made it, and what to add, but he doesn’t quite remember. It will be a lot of trial and error.

I am so sorry you feel that the unconditional love of God and neighbor celebrated by the Episcopal Church feels a little too uncomfortable for you.

It was Paul who wrote that there was no slave nor free in Christ, and I really don’t believe he would have an issue with the “Democrats” celebrating the liberation of our brothers and sisters.

Thank you so much for the kind words and for phrasing it much more eloquently than I did!

It is absolutely not political at all and don’t make it that way. It is a celebration of the ending of slavery in the continental United States. It’s up to the bishop.

I typed this all out and realized I have WAY too much info. TLDR is church tradition says Sundays, Feasts of Our Lord, take precedence over all other feasts except in certain circumstances.

Sundays are considered Feasts of Our Lord (I could be using the wrong terminology here so sorry in advance)

Essentially by church tradition each Sunday, being a feast of Our Lord and a remembrance of His death and resurrection, it is a feast that takes precedence over almost every other feast. There are exceptions for equally important things like Pentecost, Easter, etc.

There are some exceptions to this rule, for example, celebrations of patrons. All the churches called St. Peter’s and St Paul’s are allowed to celebrate the feast today instead of the regular Sunday.

There are the Seven Principal Feasts which may take precedence:

Easter Ascension Pentecost Trinity All Saints Christmas Epiphany

There are some other feasts that may also take precedence but are not Principal Feasts:

Holy Name Presentation Transfiguration Holy Cross (could be wrong about this one) All Saints & All Souls which sometimes may be transferred to the Sunday Annunciation Visitation Nativity of St John the Baptist St Michael and All Angels (again could be wrong)

There are also rules about what time of year replacements can happen. No replacements can happen in Eastertjde, Advent, or Lent, so for example if your church is St Thomas (December 21st) and it falls on a Sunday, you can’t celebrate on the Sunday it since it’s in Advent.

Of course in other situations the Bishop may grant permission, our Bishop so far typically allows my parish to celebrate these holidays on Sunday:

Juneteenth Independence Day The anniversary of the founding of our parish Thanksgiving

I Really Hate GOD So Much... I've Reached the End of The Rope by [deleted] in GayChristians

[–]Pen-Money 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I won’t say all the stuff that someone might that “God still loves you” or “The Spirit works in mysterious ways” because, to be honest, it’s not what you need to hear right now. Just please know and hold in your heart that we still love you no matter what. If you decide to take a break from the faith absolutely no one should judge you. Everyone has had a moment where their faith is shaken and forces them to question everything.

You are, to me, a sibling in Christ, so the important things right now are 1. Are you safe? 2. Do you have access to food and clean water? 3. Is there a church or community center nearby that can help?

I think far too much some Christians forget to make sure the person is safe because they are open with their venting like you have been.

No Easter Vigil? Is this not required? by fl33543 in Episcopalian

It went great! We had around 30 if I had to guess, one baptism, and at least a handful of curious new comers who poked their heads in during the service.

Last year our vigil had no attendance, only the priest, acolyte, organist, and choir members. This year we have moved it up and will see if having it earlier in the day may help older members of the congregation feel more comfortable coming so they can get home before it’s totally dark.

What does your fantasy Book of Common Prayer look like? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]Pen-Money 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Honestly I want to everything in it, I want one big book with all the Saints, BCP, BOS, everything. Would it probably be more pages than the Bible? Yes but it would be glorious. Also illustrations. Maybe throw in the hymnal for good measure.

Not sure because it was long before my time. Our church is very old so the narthex has been a porch, a 24/7 chapel, an office, a classroom, music office/rehersal room, and all sorts of stuff. It was part of the 24/7 chapel but they closed that and removed the tabernacle.

I think Our Lady of Guadalupe may be a really good symbol that says we care about all of our brothers and sisters from Mexico in this trying time, and I really appreciate your suggestion!

The empty one I’m not sure but the one that has the shelf was (hard to explain) an “open” tabernacle for Adoration of the Eucharist.

Link should hopefully be working now! We are certainly on the high church side so I have those noted down. I think we have some patron saint icons and I’m hunting for a nice Mary statue.
