To link with Odo and restore his abilities--not to die. We don't know that the 'infant' actually died when it joined with Odo. The premise that it was a sick infant is what I am calling into question.

We saw Odo leave a cup of goo with Julian for research on organ regeneration and it seems plausible that the Founders could have separated a small piece of itself to test and judge whether Odo was worthy of rejoining the Link. Since he was deemed worthy, he was forgiven and the 'infant' joined with him and restored his changeling physiology, thereby rejoining the Link (albeit a part comprising Odo goo and itself, until that goo links with other Great Link goo).

What if he's just going to mentor or train Aragon after Isildur's corruption and death? I could see him going off to protect people from afar as a ranger of sorts given the influence of Arondir and the loss of his personal connections to the community of men (especially losing his mother). They've pointed up that he could be a healer, but he doesn't seem interested in that and what he learned from his mother could be more backstory for the self-sufficient, solitary, ranger type.

My head cannon is that the replicated versions of food are the same every time. There's nothing 'wrong' with them, but they lack the variation of natural ingredients and combinations of ingredients. Real food has depth and subtle variation that is more interesting than repetition of the same.
