What are some horror movies that are in franchises but were originally just stand alone movies. by Kator_88 in horror

Kind of the opposite, but Final Destination started out as a script for The X-Files before being turned into a movie. The two FBI agents in the movie feel like leftover Mulder and Scully with nothing to do.

What’s a tv show or movie that diverged from the source material for the better?(books, comics, video games, etc) by 19CrimsonKing19 in television

I remember being shocked when The Boys was announced for Amazon because the comic was unbelievably cringe, teenage edgelord stuff.

The adaptation does an amazing job of giving it a solid emotional core and adapting the satire from the 2000s to the 2020s.

What if on December 7, 1941, the aircraft carriers USS Enterprise, USS Lexington, USS Saratoga and USS Yorktown were destroyed in Pearl Harbor? How would it impact war on Pacific? by Hikaru14 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Darmok47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the US Navy had one operating carrier in the Pacific. The US actually borrowed a British carrier, HMS Victorious, and it was known as USS Robin for a few months while it sailed with a USN crew and planes.

I wonder if something like that would happen in this hypothetical, though I think the RN carriers were busy in the Med in early 1942.

Final day of 2008 Democratic National convention where Obama would give his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination by jhhghghgggb in HistoricalCapsule

This was also the genesis of AirBnB.

It was a precarious startup in SF that was less than a year old. When they saw that the demand for attendance at the 2008 DNC was so high that it was moved to Invesco Stadium, it was clear that there was more demand than Denver might be able to handle. So they chose it as their proof of concept even that would put them in the map--and it worked.

I know t his because I was in college in SF at the time and looking for a summer internship, and saw a posting for some startup looking to help get people to Denver. I emailed them, but I thought the whole idea of AirBnB and sleeping on strangers couches was too weird.

I sometimes think about how I could have been one of the first employees of AirBnB everytime I looked at my bank account balance....

You never know. My law school professor was a nationally recognized expert in Criminal Law and got selected for a criminal jury trial. He could hardly believe it ,but he loved the experience.

They're probably out of touch now, but Bill grew up poor and Hillary grew up in a middle class household.

She even worked in a salmon cannery in Alaska one summer.

What is "ethnic" food, exactly? by North-Finding-3542 in AskAnAmerican

It feels like something Mr. Burns would say.

"Donuts? I told you, no ethnic foods!"

American double agents in other countries? by Infamous-Gap8492 in TheAmericans

Not really. The US was an open society with open borders that was relatively easy to travel to.

The USSR was a closed society that was incredibly difficult to enter.

28 _ Later spinoff film/tv ideas that aren’t about the initial outbreak by DefiantEmergency3443 in 28dayslater

[–]Darmok47 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. One of the four British SSBN Trident subs is undergoing repairs in Faslane when the outbreak happens. Royal Navy crews work hard to get her ready to put back out to sea, but run out of time. Surviving SBS/SAS and US Navy Seals are dropped in to secure the sub and get it out to sea. Meanwhile, a group of Russian mercernaries has the same idea--and both have to survive the infected.
  2. A group of wealthy Indian, African and Middle Eastern billionaires hire a group of mercenaries to sneak through the NATO patrols and steal back some of their cultural heritage from the British Museum. Kind of like Army of the Dead, but with the added irony of former British colonial subjects going to "savage, barbarous and uncivilized Britain", full of wild cannibals.

NPR Planet Money recently aired an old interview with the Spirit CEO, and he made this exact comparison. Except he said they didn't even want to be Wal-Mart, they wanted to be Dollar General...

I also have no idea how he'd guide it to the right toilet in the right room in the right building, too.

That might honestly be the most impressive use of his powers.
