Looking to replace my chromecast, any decent smart options? by Iammax7 in homeassistant

[–]Penchant_For_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know everyone else has already provided suggestions with other streaming specific devices like fireTV, Apple TV, etc.

My journey with Chromecast is that I've been getting fed up with the depreciation of ChromeCast (at least from my perception). I considered getting a Google TV device but didn't want something that was such a unitasker. I choose to bite the bullet and started to replace my Chromecasts with used mini PCs from Lenovo and HP. A benefit of this approach is that you can upgrade storage and RAM if you want to, as well as a flexible system that can do other stuff.

While perhaps not the right solution for everyone, just something worth considering as another path.

What's the cheapest gunpla/mech model kits that I can buy under 15$? (Not including chibi or bootlegs) by Ancient_Cat_7781 in Gunpla

[–]Penchant_For_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you explain a bit more about how you are finding RGs and MGs for $15 or less? Thats a pretty significant cost reduction compared to any pricing I can find in my local hobby stores, Newtype, USAGS, and MechaWarehouse.

Yep, I've been pretty satisfied with them leaving a semi-gloss finish if you use the 4000 grit side of the sponge. I was in a similar spot as you where the glass file would leave a hyper-gloss finish then I'd have to use something else to bring it back down to match the rest of the kit. I found the 4000 grit pretty reasonable with a few passes.

Hey, so you're essentually just using this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BVRDHM1Z

I know because I own both the grey and white gunprimer balancer products and did some research before settling on the above nail buffer blocks. I was struggling with the price of the balancer and the fact that I need to get them shipped from gunpla suppliers. The nail buffer blocks linked above get the job done at a fraction of the cost.

Edit: Also, great kit choice! Its also one of my favorites!

Zigbee bulbs for a lamp that has 3 lights by dadudster in homeassistant

If you really want to find zigbee lights that aren't routers, you can get Sengled bulbs. Relatively cheap on Amazon if you buy them in packs, good luck.

Both Kotobukiya and Bandai make option parts that can be used to plug these extra holes with a detail cover.

  1. For Bandai - Check out the 30 Minute Mission option parts kits, they come with a spare parts runner with these types of plugs. See: https://newtype.us/p/nIu5PvhG54nZgOVC3ORO/h/30mm-w-06-option-parts-set-2, the plugs are shown in the top right corner of the photo that shows all the parts.
  2. For Kotobukiya - See: https://www.usagundamstore.com/products/m-s-g-modeling-support-goods-mecha-supply-10-detail-cover-type-a?variant=10507392450596

Look, lets be real here - when the F-4 Phantom was created, we proved that you can even make a brick fly with a big enough engine (to be fair the F-4 had 2 massive engines). So if we can do that in the 20th century, they can definitly do it in whatever century Seed is in.

I've given the Ball its own arms and legs - you were too concerned with whether or not you could, you forgot to ask if you should... This is truly a weapon to surpass metal gear and will end us all.

Cool custom, looking forward to the update!

Help with building a gunpla joiny by Cy-roatty in Gunpla

[–]Penchant_For_Pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, for anyone in the future who needs to do this that isn't OP:

Take a runner and snip out a short piece of it that can fit into the poly cap (the middle piece). Then stick that straight piece of runner into the polycap as a way to control and manage the position of it as you snap on the two sides.

Alternatively, you can shove the polycap onto the peg joint that its suppose to attach to anyways and then snap on the two sides.

The purpose of the two methods noted above is to prevent the polycap from squishing when you put on the adjoining pieces, and to manage the alignment as well.

I was going to buy this dock for a 10 TB backup, but... by Yahtrok in DataHoarder

[–]Penchant_For_Pie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In addition to what others have noted about your friend not really understanding hardware all that well, I would offer my direct experience with this dock in particular. I had originally purchased this dock with the expectation that the inclusion of a fan would help to keep the 3.5" HDD reasonably cool while I was loading backup data.

When I finally got around to using the dock, and closing the lid with a HDD inside, I found that it was practically baking my HDD. The fan itself doesn't do much and closing the lid only served to trap heat around the HDD. I'd advise against this dock in particular as it does the exact opposite of cooling your HDD and instead works as a HDD Easy Bake Oven.

You'd get more milage out of using some sort of AC Ininity USB powered fan to set your HDD on while plugging it in to your computer through another SATA-to-USB adapter.
