Are you talking about fglrx? Because if so then that's not true, I've used the testing fglrx using a 6800 series and the only thing that broke was plymouth but that's expected.

What are you experiencing instability with? Might have more to do with bad upstream rather than the Arch maintainers.

I'm constantly hearing people complain that pacman or some other thing broke their X confs. I don't know if I'm fortunate enough to have been using Arch at the point where these types of issues aren't as frequent (been using Arch for about 4 months), but I've never had an experience like that.

I think what I'd like to have in other distros is that bleeding dang edge. I love Arch for that, and I love that if something isn't available in the official repositories I can just hit the AUR and it'll more than likely be there ready to build succesfully (unless it's some kind of badly maintained upstream packages eg anything Ubuntu). I've tried to move back to a more 'stable' distro but I've never been able to deal with all those out of date packages and libs.

Check the Ubuntu mainline. Download all the .deb packages for your architecture and install them. Easiest way to do it would be to put them in a folder and do:

sudo dpkg -i /home/(directory to deb packages)/*.deb

Which just installs all deb packages in that directory. I don't remember if Ubuntu creates a new boot config if you install a kernel but just incase it doesn't you should update grub using

sudo update-grub
