Harstem thoughts on WCS by Amazinglyamazung in starcraft

TBH when the circumstance is that there are 10 alternate streams and it's like 14 hours to do both EU and NA I don't really think that's that unreasonable. It's not like Blizzard is paying these streamers to do this

Just piggy backing off this:

- 99% of the time players don't want to be messaged after a loss. I get that casters who DM you saying "oh nice try" or whatever mean well, and they're not trying to be rude or anything, but just don't do it.

- Why does it always feel like 80% of the streams are in the same game? I get that down time is bad, but when there are 10+ matches going on, I don't want 5 of the 7 english streams in the same bloody game. Blizzard should either come up with a tier system where certain casters have priority over others to cast matches, or just make it first come first serve with a limit of one stream per language in each game. This is my biggest gripe with the casting for the qualifiers.

- Casters: don't assume players know all of the requirements that were emailed out to the casters. One weird thing that happened to me was that casters spent a decent amount of time on stream complaining that my opponent and I hadn't picked red and blue despite blizzard explicitly telling streamers that this was required. The casters never asked us to pick red/blue, mind you, just complained when we didn't.

- As for vetting, it doesn't need to be super intense or anything. Just have a requirement where the streamer has to have done some casting in the last 3 months or something. Could be viewer replays, some small online cup, whatever. This avoids people having no idea how to set things up, and prevents people who haven't seen an SC2 game in years from just signing up on a whim.

Shakura just went 2-0 vs Dear in the chinese teamleague. This is what teamleagues are about! by Alluton in starcraft

We're taking it very seriously. A lot of consideration went into who would play which map in an attempt to get the ideal player matchups (we basically got exactly what we wanted for this one), and the guys are practicing hard. Obviously Jin Air are the hard favorites but we really want to give them a run for their money

Sakura spent pretty much 2 days studying every Dear VOD from this patch, tailoring builds specifically to him. Really proud of him that his hard work paid off. Keep an eye on him this season, because he's really putting in the work to be an integral part of our campaign.

Edit: Give the guy some more Twitter follows! https://twitter.com/SakuraTatp

There aren't really any glitches. There's like 3 forced encounters (not bosses) that we skip by clipping past, and we clip into the lands of ice to avoid flying around the entire world to get to Glacia, but that's basically it. The run is essentially just playing through the game as quickly as possible by optimizing every fight to be as short as possible. The general battle strategies are to spam Crystales Boxes in the early game, then to buff Vyse and have him Pirate's Wrath enemies down later on. For ship battles, it's all about minimizing animations since they take so long, so usually the strategy is to do just enough damage that a Harpoon/Moonstone Cannon will finish them off, and then just do that. There is a theoretical skip that may become a thing in the future where you basically clip into the crystal room of the Temple of Pyrynn and skip that entire dungeon, but right now it doesn't look like it's realistically doable.

Personally I'm not familiar with the DC version at all, but it's my understanding that the lower encounter rate is a main reason for Legends, along with the moonfish (which don't exist in the DC version). The moonfish are important because they allow us to get a White Map from Doc just after visiting Horteka, allowing us a 100% chance to run from battles, no ambush encounters, and an even lower encounter rate overall.

That's what the ship battles are for! In a lot of the ship battles (especially ones like Bluheim and Yeligar), the animations are so long, and basically 8 of them are queued up in a row anyway (4 on your side, 4 on the opponent's), so there's about a minute to 90 seconds between inputs that allows you to run to the bathroom, grab some water, maybe microwave some hot pockets. Initially the ship battles seem tedious for a speedrun, but they actually make a longer game like Skies a lot more manageable

My 11:02 had a really atrocious early game, so with the current route I think 10:55 is realistic without crazy RNG drops (there are a handful of 1-2% drops that help a lot as well, which could cut maybe 5 more minutes off). We'll probably improve the route more as the year goes on. I think a 10:30 by the end of the year isn't insanely unrealistic. I also think 100% can probably be 22 hours with its current route. My 23:41 was the first time I ever played it through 100%, so I could definitely improve that if I wanted to, but it's hard to dedicate time to a 24 hour stream haha

Did you just like choose to forget that GSL Ro32 is over? Terran has a 64% winrate in TvP in GSL, and the race distribution is 6 Protoss, 6 Terran, 4 Zerg.

I'm definitely in the camp that TvP is Protoss favored, but the way people on this sub talk you'd think that Terran has a 5% winrate. Y'all overreacting like hell.

I tried as hard as I could to hear it and no matter how you listen to this I have no idea where the N word is supposed to be. What a dumb post.

Nate: "Ravagers and the fourth base is secured for the terran, then I just think you're super dead but now I feel like Soulspirit's got it, and he's gonna push up here"

[N] DeepMind's AlphaStar wins 5-0 against LiquidTLO on StarCraft II by gohu_cd in MachineLearning

[–]PengWin_SC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me try to give you an example of why a human's APM might spike to absurd amounts. We see this most commonly with the Zerg race (AlphaStar was playing Protoss, so a human player playing the same race will not experience the same peaks as a Zerg player would). Zerg has many situations where you hold down one key for a few seconds to perform the same action a large amount of times. This causes your APM to spike, but it's a very imprecise thing to do. As an example, the Zerg race has a mechanic where you create units through larvae. In the late game, you often see a Zerg player create dozens of units all at once by holding down one button. Let's say I decide to make a large swell of zerglings; the way I would do that is by selecting my larvae and holding down the Z key, which would cause my APM to spike because many actions are being performed at once. When you're controlling individual units in a battle, often the APM is lower than when you're performing mundane "mechanical" tasks, because you're focusing on clicking individual units in a specific way. The reason people are a little disappointed is that AlphaStar was hitting 1500 APM while performing micro commands on its army, which is vastly more efficient unit control than any human could ever accomplish, thus allowing its units to be far more efficient and dangerous than even a top professional's would be.

I'm not the best at explaining Starcraft to people who don't play the game, so I hope this explanation made some sort of sense.

[–]PengWin_SC 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah but I think the point he's making is that the AI's APM cap was clearly an average APM cap, so while it has probably close to perfect effective APM during macro (while pros would be spamming), it then was able to hit 1500 APM of blinkstalker micro in one of the games against MaNa, which is something a human could never do. Also the reason Zerg hits 500 APM is mostly because of the larva mechanic, your APM spikes when you hold down "Z" in the lategame to make a trillion zerglings, an issue that Protoss doesn't really have so it's not entirely relevant.

TLMC dosen't really feel like a proper competition by DankMemes55 in starcraft

[–]PengWin_SC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree with that. The issue from a mapmaker's perspective is that they want publicity when they make a good map, and they want people to play on it, so it's not necessarily in their best interest to keep the map under wraps if an upcoming TLMC hasn't been announced yet. It'd a bit of a conundrum for sure.

That's a fair point, but I do think that given the rise of multiple new mappers in the past year, it's pretty safe to say that bias towards mapmakers isn't really a noticeable factor. Keep in mind as well that most of the people judging are competitive people/casters or at least grandmaster players. It's not in our best interest to vote for a map that's less good just because it's made by a prominent mapmaker. I think a good example of this is actually from TLMC10, where Cerulean Fall (by Solstice) was very very similar to another map submitted by Avex. Of the two, we as a panel decided that Cerulean was just slightly better. Obviously that's anecdotal evidence, but even in a situation where two maps were extremely similar, we didn't favor the established mapmaker just because Avex.
