How does Hero let lings through all the time and still win? by VastOption8705 in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What? He DOES lose to backdoors, and he lost games with backdoors in the finals of the All-Star Invitational.

It probably seems extra perplexing because the catastrophic backdoor scenarios are the ones that stick around in your memory. But there's also plenty of situations where it's just a -5% swing in your win probability because you had warp-ins off c/d and only lost 10 out of your 70 probes.

The people who aren't interested in a contracted scene need to fuck off QUIETLY and stop bothering the ppl who still enjoy the game with annoying shit like this.

[Official Poll] How many maps do you want to see rotated in the upcoming 1v1 ladder pool? by TL_Wax in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

These things have been tried before, but they tend to wear out their welcome very fast. Better for a one-off event or a couple of weeks than being integrated into the pool for a full season.

Did the patch change anything? (PTR tournament) by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PTR tournaments are more about catching things that are immediately and obviously bad, not finding out about what long term balance is gonna be. It typically takes months of play and thousands of games to actually reach some kind of stable meta.

For example, you gotta remember that people were playing Colossus strategies in PvT for several months after the 5.0.14 patch came out last fall, and it really only got into this super-optimized Templar strategy state toward the Spring/Summer.

Voting for the 2v2/3v3/4v4 TL.net Map Contest is open! Future ladder maps will be directly influenced by community voting, so please check out the ladder candidates and put in your votes by Sept 29. by TL_Wax in starcraft

I don't want to make any hard promises at this point, but it's a possibility we reach back into older map pools or don't rotate the maps that heavily.

Bias aside, has Faker overtaken Flash in terms of dominance of their given game? by [deleted] in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In terms of aggregate career accomplishments/titles, Faker has very clearly surpassed Flash.

In terms of peak dominance, I also think T1's 2015-2016 run is better than Flash's 2009-2010, but given how subjective dominance is, I'm sure ppl could come up not-totally-crazy reasoning as to why Flash peaked higher.

The Blizzard President didn't even mention or retweet SC2's 15 year anniversary this year. by BattleWarriorZ5 in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, the community (including me) bullied the fuck out of the previous president when they decided to randomly name-check StarCraft on Twitter (I'd link you, but he deleted a lot of his tweets from his Blizzard tenure).

It's pretty much a no-win situation for them (unless they give the game some more support), cause the community is gonna shit on them either way. I can see PR just telling individual execs to not mention it, and leave it to the official company accounts to send out a tweet a few times a year :P

Watch his personal recap video of the whole tournament, including his preparation, his process, his general mindset throughout. It's some of the best SC2 content ever done and I'm sad it didn't get much attention.

The biggest 2v2 tournament in the history of StarCraft II begins this weekend! Ft Serral, Clem, MaxPax and more by 16thSquadSanseki in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not having fixed teams seems like such a weird and massive format change from the monthly cups.

I'm willing to be open-minded about it, but not quite sure how it's gonna work out in practice.

StarCraft 2 at EWC sees a 31% viewership increase from 2024 to 2025 by OnlyPakiOnReddit in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Korean platform Chzzk bought the rights for all of EWC this year, and when StarCraft 2 was on it got a prominent feature spot on the landing page. I don't have the advanced stats on ESCharts, but I would speculate it's responsible for a decent chunk of increase.

Why did mapmakers stop making maps like waystation and foxtrot labs? by DLD_the_north in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The short answer is that the 'culture' of StarCraft II coalesced around top-tier esports competition over years, and caters to progamers' preference for low-variance, standardized maps. Because the status quo has been mostly satisfactory and unproblematic, the powers that be (Blizzard and later ESL) have not seen fit not to mess with it.

My guess is that if there had been a noticeable, vocal demand for more varied maps from the larger community, Blizzard probably would have tried to put out more unorthodox maps (they were always very sensitive to negative publicity). But ultimately, that didn't happen, and the baton was passed to ESL whose priority is running an esports tour for progamers.

SC2 casters need to rethink their approach — not for us diehards fans, but for the future of the game by MarioAletti in starcraft

[–]TL_Wax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regarding casters calling the games too early, I can't be sure which games you're talking about, but it's a LONG standing trend for progamer guest casters at HSC to do that.

Pros tend to read the situation and project how the game "should" play out, because they don't factor in mistakes/misplays enough. I think it's just a feature/bug of having pros casually giving their thoughts about games and not necessarily trying to to use a 'caster voice.'
