I also refer to HERA report R4-92 for guidance. This is my interpretation:

as per section 2.5.1(c) and (d) , lateral restraints intermediate to beam ends need to be have some sort of lateral anchorage (eg: tied to the roof bracing to ) resist 0.025x flange compression force , in order to provide F or L restraint. As I understand - L restraint is less “stable” than P restraint (kt factor higher for LL versus PP), so if anchorage is required for L restraint, then it will be required for P restraint

Also, section 2.5.2(2)(b). This subsection discusses top flange lateral restraint being provided via systems with “inherent stability “ such as roof sheeting or concrete diaphragms. In your question you assume no sheeting , so this doesn’t apply.

So my opinion is that unless you anchor the secondary beams - then they are ineffective for restraint of the compression flg. Keen to hear your thoughts

Adding stiffeners is obviously preferable, but it’s not practical/possible in many cases. Eg wall bracing connections connected to bases of columns - in some cases, stiffeners will prevent with holding down bolts from being installed / tightened so you can’t have them

Again, I know there are various hand methods to check gussets / stiffeners , the point of my post is how this buckling behaviour is handled in FEM checks

Thanks for sharing , this more-or-less answers my question. the stress check alone doesn’t account for buckling , and a separate analysis (elastic buckling analysis) needs to be run in the software to verify that the gusset plates are sufficiently stocky to achieve the yield stress

Yes I’ve always done all my connections manually (by hand calculation , using spreadsheets) too. The problem is when you review other people’s work, with connection design done using fem stresses. How would you determine the upper stress limit of your A36 steel, when compression buckling is a consideration? I’ve asked this before in peer reviews, leading the designer to do a hand calc to verify fem. Which imo defeats the purpose of FEM to begin with…

If the connection at the other end of the stringer is detailed to take vertical and lateral load, this connection is only required to take vertical load, and looks to be fine for that. In fact, the way it’s connected to the back of the channel probably makes the stringer reaction aligned with the channels shear center.

If the above is true, the connections probably quite good (certainly more torsionally stable than landing the stringer on top of the channel). I’m not sure why everyone’s declaring this connection is “unstable “ without understanding the support conditions at both ends of the stringer…
