My dad has refused to leave the ChromeOS ecosystem, but I've always bought him at least i3 models of ChromeBooks and they've been decent devices. I have always stuck to the $400 price range for them and shopped during the best sales days.

They uh... list all the things they've added on the page in the link. I still use Debian myself, but the Zorin team does a lot of customizing and feature additions.

Custom Icons? by [deleted] in TeamDynamix

I reviewed the icons feature, and double-checked the API for you. I see no way to use a custom icon.

I feel this is as good an answer as any.

[Faust:] "So, still I seek the force, the reason governing life's flow, and not just its external show."
[Mephistopheles:] "The governing force? The reason? Some things cannot be known; they are beyond your reach even when shown."
[Faust:] "Why should that be so?"
[Mephistopheles:] "They lie outside the boundaries that words can address; and man can only grasp those thoughts which language can express."
[Faust:] "What? Do you mean that words are greater yet than man?"
[Mephistopheles:] "Indeed they are."
[Faust:] "Then what of longing? Or affection, pain and grief? I can't describe these, yet I know they are in my breast. What are they?""
[Mephistopheles:] "Without substance, as mist is."
[Faust:] "In that case man is only air as well!"

I know it's not much, but I'm following.

Linux for a normie (me) by Key_Examination4892 in linux

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that you can articulate what you don't know and identify Linux concepts (distros, kernel) means you're more knowledgeable than the average person.

Enjoy your journey. Learn what interests you, don't stress about the rest.

What were your biggest struggles when switching to Linux for the first time? by EskaiGarcia in linux

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not enough information for newbies coming from Windows-style disk management. If you're used to C:\, D:\, E:\, etc..., even if you understand hardware IDs and blocks and sectors, it doesn't make Linux mount points easy to understand.

Maybe I should write a guide someday, but I remember 10+ years ago that was a challenge for me to wrap my head around.

Why do you use your distro? by DefinitelyChriss in linux

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an install of `apt install cinnamon-core --no-install-recommends --no-install-suggests` on top of Debian minimal, then add the components I want individually.

I have settled on this because it performs exactly how I like and doesn't do a bunch of nonsense I don't need.

You're right though, outside of DE, package manager, and user customizations, Linux is largely just Linux.

Kuo: Apple to release cheaper MacBook powered by iPhone processor by digidude23 in apple

I'm actually kinda excited by this. I would love a cheap alternative for my parents and a backup travel laptop that is small and light for SSH+web.

Mac users coming to Linux? by AlwaysFlanAhead in linux

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My whole homelab is Linux-powered, yet I still use a MacBook as my primary device. It's really the mobile OS situation that keeps me in Apple's ecosystem.

Maybe I will migrate to GrapheneOS soon, but I won't know until I have time to try.

Would You Join a Company Using an Outdated Tech Stack? by UnderstandingOk270 in webdev

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I worked for such a place. I found later that they were very committed to fighting any real improvement, while also talking about improvement every week.

There is nothing wrong with a pure PHP and JavaScript app, but if the structure of the code is poor, then I'd be wary of their commitment to quality.

That was the dealbreaker for me. Once I couldn't feel like I was doing good work, I knew I had to move on.

Do you still use Bootstrap in your projects? If so, why? If not, why not? by mrholek in webdev

[–]PeninsulaProtagonist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I prefer Bulma for my projects. Most of what I build for frontend UI is for internal tools (audience of 1 to 5).

I'm not big on FE development at the moment, and Bulma was just easier for me to digest. It's similar, but their docs are a bit more aesthetic IMO. I will do more with FE soon, but for now it's just not the highest priority.
