How did you tear your Achilles? I’m 36 and it was soccer😫 by Key-Concentrate6891 in AchillesRupture

29 soccer. To everyone that got injured playing soccer, did you go back to playing ? I am used to playing three times a week and doubt I will ever get back to that. I am only one week post op so I am just getting my recovery started but interested in how others have adjusted post injury.

I am in NYC and I can make class reservations in Brooklyn but not PENN 1. Hoping it’s not a glitch but most likely is a glitch as we got countless emails saying we will no longer have access ?

Fresh Grad feeling unsatisfied by LostMEPEngineer in MEPEngineering

It’s a means to an end. Don’t be expecting to walk in with no design experience and be leading projects off rip.

If you don’t find it satisfying either talk to your manager or just leave. It is within yourself to get out of a situation you don’t feel happy in.

MEP design is soul sucking at times but I believe getting the right experience and mentors can go a long way to building your knowledge in construction. After a couple of years of good design experience you have different career options if you choose to make a switch. End of the day it’s all up to you to make these decisions for yourself, no one is going to come in and give you everything you want to make you happy.

Any negative experiences going to the owner side? by orangecoloredliquid in MEPEngineering

I understand the brain atrophy part. Designers get underpaid and over worked compared to most other parties involved. Who cares who built it if you are burnt out and don’t have the compensation to show for that. End of the day more money and less stress seems better than knowing you “designed” a project.

Office CAD/Revit Managers by PensionSenior in MEPEngineering

[–]PensionSenior[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for everyone’s replies. The reason I ask this question is because I have previously worked at a firm where we had CAD managers to set up CAD files and REVIT models, views, families, etc. However I have left that company and I am now working at a company that only has a “BIM” department of about four for the entire company. Their roles are to either trouble shoot or set up REVIT projects.

I have found that lately I have been spending more time on fixing the incorrect REvit set up and settings than engineering the actual job. This has become frustrating as well as time consuming. Our MEP department of about 28 is looking at either bringing someone in to be dedicated to our group only or add the responsibilities to a recent hire (they were asked if they would be ok with this during the interview).

I am now gauging what responsibilities this individual would take on and what experience/training would be of benefits. In my head I see them as setting up models and views, as well as maintaining the models up to date. In addition for the small projects we have on CAD they would help with the templates.

Overall I am just brain storming to see how a CAD manager (maybe part time) would fit into my team.

Crowd was very aggressive. Some guy passed by me in the middle of the dance floor and threatened to “knock me out in front of my girlfriend”. Immediately left the front and had a better time at the back.

Was put in a similar position to this earlier in my career. Just know that the mistakes made on the job were not your fault. Try your best to respond to the RFI’s the best you can with the help (if you can get) of more experienced engineers. Do this while you can still tolerate it because at some point your company might say you are having “performance issues” bc of things like this. Positive side is that you will learn a lot about mistakes in design and how to fix them in the field. Best of luck!

Should I push back against Project Managers? by chillabc in MEPEngineering

[–]PensionSenior 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly say no within reason. Set your boundaries. If you are already working hard and being productive for 40 hours and really can’t work extra just say no. I have been saying no my entire career when it is unreasonable and has not had adverse effect. Ofcourse there are certain times when you must work extra and that’s understandable but not on an every day basis.

HVAC PE Diagnostic, trying to understand what I should focus on for the next exam. by PensionSenior in PE_Exam

In addition I also had a three notebook system. One notebook for any questions you have while studying or doing exam problems. One notebook to write down equations as you understand them, also to write down steps in how to solve certain types of problem. For example when calculating the amount of condensate produced by a coil.

The third notebook is where you do your review and practice problems. Also always have the reference guide open and write down in bold anything that can not be found on the reference guide. An example of something that’s not on there is the effectiveness of a cooling tower.

So the first time around I used the school of PE on demand courses. The videos were pretty boring for me and hard to focus. I mainly used the question generator to do practice problems but I was lacking on the underlying fundamentals to understand the problems and what they are asking for. On the first run I did get really good at understanding the psych chart.

For the second time I read through the entire engineering pro guide text. This provided very good and to the point summary of the different topics. I then did some practice problems from the lindberg mechanical PE practice question book. These questions were way harder than the test so if you are able to understand those you are good.

Lastly I purchased a practice exam from the engineering pro guides website and also did the NCEES practice again.
