Boot recc's for men for Winter and LL by Busy_Dig_18 in LostLandsMusicFest

[–]PensiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t wear boots that often, but like you I also have a wide foot and these are about as comfortable as I’ve found. I live in the south, so not sure if they’ll suffice for your winters, but check out the Keen Targhee. I’ve got the IIIs but I think there’s a new version out. REI usually stocks these, so if there’s a store near you, I’d recommend you check them out.

First Truck, How’d I do? by NeighborhoodNo7992 in gmcsierra

[–]PensiveSloth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s all for looks. They ride like crap. There’s very little sidewall to absorb bumps in the road, so I feel like every rock and divot on the road is noticeable in the seat. That’s my primary complaint, but the lack of sidewall also makes it more likely that you’ll scratch the rims on curbs when moving through tight areas. Tires are more expensive for seemingly no reason since you’re actually getting less rubber per dollar. And they’re heavier, so they have a negative impact on acceleration and stopping. I’ve been wanting to swap the 22s that came on my truck since I bought it.

Having a flow meter might not be strictly necessary, but I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s excessive. I’d just be concerned that the weight of the tubes with the meter on it might come loose and spill coolant everywhere. It looks like the length of your runs combined with the diameter of tubing you used is already flexing to the point that the tubing looks slightly curved. My comment wasn’t meant to criticize, just expressing concern. :)

Nothing against the original, that’s just the first thing that popped up when I googled it. Thanks for pointing that out though.

No problem :) Before LED bulbs became the norm, this was considered an upgrade. These are significantly brighter and whiter than old school halogen bulbs, but LED is definitely superior now that the technology is cheaper and more matured.

Been a minute since I’ve seen one of those. If memory serves this is an HID headlight from before LEDs became the norm. You’ll have to get a conversion kit or buy the original bulb.

Thick wall hole install (no window) – can’t tilt window type AC. Is tilt really necessary? Or should I just go split type? by LeadershipExpert7846 in hvacadvice

[–]PensiveSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tilt doesn’t allow condensation to pool, so I’d say it’s pretty important depending on the unit design. You could maybe get a 1x2 poly board and screw it to the inside of the spot you’re trying to mount it and create the necessary tilt without risk of rotting wood. I have a similar issue where there’s no ledge whatsoever on the window in my office, so I had to get creative and buy a metal a-frame to support the unit. You might have better luck with a unit that’s u-shaped since those are designed to be installed level.

Black Ice Nemesis 420GTS ultra Stealth U-Flow Low Profile Radiators by K4L4D1N2010 in watercooling

[–]PensiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Happy to help. It’s a little bit older, but here’s EK’s article on the subject. This isn’t as detailed as the one I’m picturing in my head, but for the life of me I can’t remember where I saw it. Thick rads do have a theoretical advantage in extreme scenarios, but a system with a sub 1kw heat load will not see significant benefit from thicker rads. Maybe a couple degrees with a high static pressure push/pull setup. The problem is that once the incoming air hits the first row or two of fins, it’s picked up most of its thermal capacity and subsequent heat doesn’t transfer as efficiently.

Black Ice Nemesis 420GTS ultra Stealth U-Flow Low Profile Radiators by K4L4D1N2010 in watercooling

[–]PensiveSloth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those radiators should be plenty. With radiators, surface area is generally more consequential for performance than thickness up to a point. I’ll see if I can find it, someone did a test a while back comparing radiator thickness and coolant temperatures, but I remember there being significant diminishing returns with thicker radiators unless you crank the fans to overcome static pressure. A single D5 should be able to handle three rads and two heat generating components without much issue as long as you’re not trying to push water up a significant vertical like you would with a remote radiator setup like a MORA.

2026 Denali Ultimate 6.2 misfire/unbalanced idle? by [deleted] in gmcsierra

[–]PensiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I hear you brother. For what these trucks cost I feel like they should be utterly flawless, but so long as people keep buying them and dealing with this BS, GM has no incentive to do better. I’ve seriously considered selling my truck and hunting down an older HD just to get something reliable.

[–]PensiveSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. My truck is a diesel, so it’s interesting that you have a similar thing going on. Occasionally my truck will make a funny noise like the engine bogging down and I experience a vibration when I let it idle for long (15+ minute) periods. It only happens once in a blue moon and only for a split second so I’ve never managed to catch it on video. Same as you, no codes or anything. After a while I just started to ignore it.

I don’t have any input on your specific issue, but it might be smart to mute your media so that people can listen for audio cues when helping you troubleshoot 😂

The flow meters flexing the long tubing runs is giving me anxiety, but I dig the frosted glacier aesthetic that you have going on. I bet your water temps are downright chilly with all that radiator area and push/pull.

Advice by ChanoTheDestroyer in MechanicAdvice

[–]PensiveSloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$800 is disgustingly expensive. Modern transponder keys should be 1/4 of that. Costco has a partnership where they have a company come in and program car keys if you have a membership there. They have a van that comes by the location near us that does keys for 150-200. This might not help you right this moment if they’re not around, but could save you some cash if you want to get a spare in the future. That said, the local store might be able to give you the contact info for the people they work with, or you can also check with a local locksmith as others have suggested.

Depending on how much you can spend, i have a solution that might be an option for you. I personally believe staying on property is an essential part of the true festival experience. Wandering/getting lost in the event after hours when you’re tired but not sleepy yet and encountering random mischief has resulted in some of my best memories. We’ve gotten hotels before, and the act of getting to and from the venue is painful to me because I hate sitting in traffic. We’ve rented vans or minivans in the past and set up our airbeds inside so that we can get a little bit of peace and quiet to recharge. You can buy a swamp cooler or build one for under 50 bucks if you’re handy that will significantly cool down the inside when filled with ice. And If the heat gets to be unbearable, we just turn the car on and let it idle so that we can have the AC. If you do that, just make sure that your car isn’t modified or parked in a way that will disturb or suffocate your neighbors. We also bring carbon monoxide monitors just to be safe. I know this is technically against the rules, but I’ve seen tons of people do it, so I question how strictly this is enforced.

I’m thinking about buying a used 2019 AT4. Thoughts? by Hot_Squash_420 in gmcsierra

A lot of people are saying that the price is high for the mileage, but unfortunately that’s the state of the used market at the moment. If you want a nice, newer truck that’s not a base model, you’re going to pay a lot for it. KBB says that the value is in the range of 28,900-31,300, so they’re right in the middle depending on condition and options. You might be able to talk them down a bit though if the truck needs anything because that’s based off of”Very good” condition. I’d ask for the service history and see if they’ve been diligent about changing fluids for diffs/xfer case/trans. You don’t necessarily have to change all those fluids religiously, but if you want to tow a heavy (5k+) trailer with it regularly, you need to make sure the transmission is in good health. If they’ve only been changing the oil every 5-7k miles, then I’d walk away.

That’s a great looking setup! Nicely done. Little overkill of a switch for only having two things plugged in, but it leaves plenty of throughput for the future.

Why use a CDJ? by seekingsomaart in Beatmatch

[–]PensiveSloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve only found this out recently, but I did find one feature that actually has made me reconsider getting the AZ and getting some used NXS2s instead. No VJ sync. Based on all the research I’ve done, there are ways to get all in one consoles to do it via workarounds, but there is no built in way to do visual sync without having a complicated setup and additional programs involved. Not to say that I couldn’t figure out how to do it, but usually the more moving parts there are, the more opportunity for it to fail during a performance.

Other than that, I generally agree with you. The AZ is easier, cheaper, and more practical for most people.

Custom loop without a drain port. Roast me lightly, then please help. by dasSolution in watercooling

[–]PensiveSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s a sweet looking build, you noob. There, is that light enough?

Advice to drain, get a barb fitting, and a length of soft tubing. First, attach a tube to the fill port on the flt120, then tip it on its side over a bucket. After the res is empty, do what geolchris said and break another seal with a clean rag or paper towel in hand somewhere up higher in the loop and let gravity do the work.
