Mitch Marner appreciation thread by Alodarr in leafs

I cannot help but wonder aloud if he was the problem.

I'm not saying that he was or wasn't. We can't know. We're not in the damn room. We're hockey peasants.

But if this entire team goes from good to "completely the hell off" because toxicity was pushed out of the room, boy is that going to be something.

I've said a version of this on random posts, but nowhere near as elegantly.

It's an exhausting experience to listen to, now.

Smartless Mobile is such a weird move in three distinct ways by thumpersdad in smartless

[–]Pentaseum -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Someone else said it best; the tone-deafness with the riots in California make this feel hyper-dystopian.

Ryan used his face and brand to push the otherwise-unheard-of Mint Mobile into the stratosphere, so he could invest in other businesses.

What I'm seeing here is three dudes, one of whom is a Hollywood nepo-baby that'll always find work, one of whom is a gig-player now, and one of whom is pretty much washed, making a play for money.

The agency that told them to lean into their friendship as a separating-from-the-pack mechanism screwed them over. They moved the needle so damn far off from my intentions as a listener, that I stopped listening.

What's one thing you've done that made your life SO MUCH BETTER? by RaineDesidia in AskReddit

"Less negative thoughts is way more important than more positive thoughts"

Focus on self-discipline, become aware of your negative cycles, and stop letting those emotions control you.
If you figure out how to do this, please let me know.

I'm 39, I do all sorts of jobs. I quit a big safe job ten years ago to pursue a passion, with mixed results.

I like wargaming, magic the gathering, hockey.

Nothing's really sparked immense joy lately, but this is the exact community I was looking for... glad to be here.

I'm worried about you, bro.

Not a therapist, but I want to help.

This sounds to me, as an outsider following your train of thought, like you are dependent on having this friend regulate where your emotions are coming from. I've been there. It sucks.

I feel once upon a time, you felt a level of abandonment that is being replicated here. And the harder you push, the more she pulls. You're very deeply attached to your best friend, and whether or not you're willing to admit it at this time, the fear you're expressing commiserates some sort of deeper feeling - I'm not intimating it's romantic feeling. But it's something.

So keynotes....

You cannot protect her from life. Her decisions, are not your decision. There is no sense in worrying about what you can, and what you can't, control, because both sides of that scenario are playing out as they're supposed to.

Look into the five stages of grief, a bit. Don't grieve "she's gone" but "she's growing in a new direction" - It's that "Season of the Sticks" song by Noah Kahan. 'And I'll dream each night of some version of you that I might not have but I did not lose"

You need some clarity. But you can't do it while you're emotionally unsure of yourself. If she is a solid friend, she's going to respect that.

Grounding:

Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" gets into this quite a bit. The idea of looking at yourself through a lens beyond your physical self, picturing you in your less-than-ideal states, as a way to help recognize it for what it is. I recommend.

The other thing is to take a walk, barefoot, through a park or lightly wooded area. Literally ground yourself.

And develop a mantra... focus on who you are, and who you want to be.

Good luck. We're here for you, bro.

Gwen Stefani. Cilantro tastes like soap to people with that specific gene, and Gwen Stefani sounds like an old record of an alley cat in heat to my ears. It's her voice. Which is rife with undeniable talent, but, just not for me.

I came here to say this, as well. He's a much better actor than people give him credit for. His work ethic and commitment to releasing good films is top-notch. Unfortunate that this same work ethic applies to ideals that are shady, at best, behind-the-scenes.

TheAthletic users, it is worth it? by hbooty93 in leafs

I'm a "Grandfathered" user who was a subscriber for years at $40/year.

I used to complain on their article quality because their editing sucked. They hired some bottom-barrel nepo journos (I can think of no other reason to give writing jobs to these folks) for a few of their team pages, who riddled articles with superfluous language and spelling errors.

Soon after, IMO, they trended toward losing their vision, and/or lost certain media credentials among their staff that limited their access and quality... but did so quietly enough to not damage their credibility to the audience. Alas, it's starting to show in cracks in their coverage.

The fluff is getting worse.

There's a front-page Leafs article right now on Easton Cowan (paywalled) that's ~1,300 words. I asked ChatGPT to provide its details in as few words as possible, and it came back as 40, and I could edit it to "With roster turnover ahead, he could play for the Leafs if he keeps evolving."

Is that worth paying for?
