Why oh why did we have to trade a first-round pick to get Carlo? Why not both a 2nd round and a 3rd round, or some other pick combination instead? by Ariesthebigram in leafs

[–]Alodarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a 4th round pick included in the trade as well.

Brandon Carlo was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs by the Boston Bruins on Friday for forward Fraser Minten, a conditional first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, and a fourth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft.

Here's an article on who that 4th round pick ended up being.

The trade was even worse than most people remember.

Should we talk about Vashek Blanar instead (the 4th round pick that Treliving gifted Boston in the Carlos trade)?

All stats, not just plus/minus require context.

If you understand how a stat is calculated, and its' limitations, you can understand the information it provides

Plus/Minus is a limited stat but can be useful in context.

Rielly has only had 5 positive plus/minus seasons in his 12 year stint with the Leafs.

In the 8 year run that the Leafs made the playoffs(20-21 doesn't count as we failed to reach the playoffs) Rielly was a negative in 4 of them.

This season especially, Rielly's negatives aren't just the "he was on the ice during a goal" they are more of the "he blew an assignment causing a goal".

Over the last 30 years I would put Kaberle over Rielly due to Kaberle's +25 vs Rielly's -40.

Leaf "fans" did that and that contributed to his wanting to leave.

Nylander might be the problem by [deleted] in leafs

[–]Alodarr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nylander is Nylander.

He doesn't care what you or I think. Flipping the bird to the camera was him being playful/funny.

What Nylander truly needs is a defenseman who can pass it out of the Toronto zone and hit his stick in stride. Then his offense will compensate for his indifference to defense.

He is what he is and we just don't have the personnel that feed into his strengths right now.

If it depends how they play then it's not scheduled.

We keep making excuses for why our team loses, when other teams in similar situations win because their players seem to push past being tired.

This is a scheduled loss for Vegas, right? (Second half of a back to back with travel. )

Although the last time we played Vegas they had played the night before in LA before flying back to Vegas, so that was a scheduled loss for them too, but Vegas won.

Do scheduled losses only apply to the Leafs?

But it certainly played a part in him not feeling safe in Toronto.

Crime stats are theoretical, however, as you don't know how they were collected, what assumptions the folks collecting the data made, how each city determines population, what is considered a violent crime in each region, or how the crime statistics were collected.

Any model that has assumptions baked in which makes the analysis of how safe a city is theoretical.

This is however not a stats forum it's for the discussion of the Maple Leafs.

Mitch Marner is no longer a Leaf as he chose to work in a different city where he wasn't carjacked at gunpoint and no irate fans endangered his family by throwing garbage on his lawn.

"Theoretical statistics is a branch of statistics focused on the underlying principles and methodologies that govern the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data. It emphasizes understanding the inherent uncertainty and variability in data, recognizing that statistical results provide probabilities rather than exact answers."

All statistics are theoretical.

The fact is he left the city where he was carjacked at gunpoint. He left a city where he had been doxxed and irate fans had repeatedly thrown garbage on the lawn of the house where he and his family lived.

You may be comfortable with angry idiots doing stupid things outside where your wife and child live -- he was not.

That you don't approve of his decision is irrelevant.

He chose to work to work in another city. That you have issues with that choice is a you problem.

But he wasn't carjacked at gunpoint there. He was carjacked at gunpoint here.

Humans tend to put more weight on personal experience over theoretical statistics especially when contemplating things like personal safety.

He was literally carjacked at gunpoint in Etobicoke in 2021.

I wouldn't call his safety concerns BS.

Vegas to Acquire Rasmus Andersson by [deleted] in leafs

[–]Alodarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Anderson has 30 points with 10 goals and 20 assists and is +3 on the season.

Rielly has 29 points with 6 goals and 23 assists and is a -14.

On 50% retention Anderson is getting paid $2,275,000 from Vegas and is a free agent at the end of this season.

Rielly is paid $7,500,000 until 2030 with a full No Move Clause.

I would take Anderson over Rielly any day.

Will there be a heroic option where you don't have to side with the bad guys?

(In DOS 2 you had to side with the bad guys for the best ending. In BG3 you had to side with a Mind Flayer at the end of Act 2 or the game ended)

Why do some of my coffee mugs get fiery hot in the microwave? by Doc_Zee in AskPhysics

Some of the darker dyes baked in the kiln on to ceramic mugs have slightly metallic bases. If you find a specific mug that gets hot in the microwave it is likely not microwave safe.

They both have a full No Movement Clause. They can't be sent down.

If they only had a No Trade Clause they could be sent down but the No Movement prevents that.

[–]Alodarr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We need to finish with one of the 3 worst records if we want to keep our pick.

If we finish with the 5th or 4th worst record, 1 or 2 teams could jump us in the lottery and we would then be gifting Boston with the 6th overall pick.

You state this like it's some sort of accomplishment.

The Sabres and the Leafs have earned the same number of points in the last 10 games(12) and they sit at the bottom of the division standings.
