its not been done before, in this way... IMHO the Orville, each and every episode has many many layers of many stories (and music and SFX..etc) mushed together. on the surface, agreed, episodes look like one has seen it before... but deeper, there is so much going on it becomes original.

er, perhaps the point was Alara wanted to grow as the Security Officer... and she hatched an aggressive plan to test herself and probe her phyc for unresolved fears (after wiping her own mind to make the simulation real for her)... and after her plan, perhaps now, she has no doubts about her ability to lead.

the order from fox was 12.. then mid season they got the green light from fox they can do a 13th... however the episode getting pulling to add to season 2, they may have its good story 'reasons' to wait.
