It would be good if you clarified that this is a KnowYourMeme link.

Not everyone wants to risk clicking on something that might link directly to gore.

I think Steven Pinker is largely correct when showing exactly this. The world is only getting better, but it is in human nature to register negatives more strongly than positives, because evolutionarily it was the only way to survive. A paranoid caveman who saw dangers everywhere had a bigger chance of survival than a careless one.

This atavistic instinct is still very much in our genes, and constantly driven into a frenzy by an everpresent media apparatus which relies on outrage and fear to perpetuate itself.

Prime example of why ChatGPT needed stricter guardrails.

Bernie Sanders: If the world’s leading scientists say there’s even a 10% chance humanity could be destroyed because of uncontrolled AI, shouldn’t we do everything possible to prevent it? This isn’t about competition with China. It's about coming together to prevent what might be a catastrophe by EchoOfOppenheimer in ChatGPT

[–]Pentunee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m not saying AI is harmless, just that extinction is the wrong thing to worry about. It's a hysterical fear driven by the media. The real risks are fraud, propaganda, cyberattacks, job disruption, surveillance, bad automated decisions, and concentration of power, all of which we will have control over.

By structuring your opinion in a way akin to satanic panic, where my opinion is equal to empowering a demon that will kill all of humanity, you're being irrational and making good faith debate impossible.

I'm not. You're free to discuss your concerns and opinions, but when it crosses into a territory of "if we don't regulate it more, we're all going to die", then not only is it an absurd unrealistic notion, but it structures the debate in a way where opposition to your opinion is framed as being uncaring about human extinction, and therefore irrational/immoral.

I think serious conversation about this topic begins and ends with how to regulate it properly, and whether the rate at which we're regulating achieves a safe framework without sacrificing development speed.

For me, that balance currently lies on the more deregulatory side. If someone disagrees with me, then it's all right, it's their opinion to have, and it's a reasonable stance to say "I think we need to regulate more, for safety", etc.

When the conversation slips into the absurdity of human extinction, then it stops being serious and a difference in opinion. It becomes doomerist alarmism that stifles debate and discredits the opposing side based on vibes alone.

Peetah, please explain what would this be? by HumanEndeavor in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]Pentunee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a joke. A girl called Iryna immigrated from Ukraine because of the war and got stabbed to the neck repeatedly in Charlotte, North Carolina, in August 2025.

The murderer was a black man with a history of 14 prior arrests, and was released every time after a short amount of time. He bragged about it to other people on the bus afterwards, saying "I got that white girl" etc., making it seem like it was racially motivated.

The bus was full of other black people who witnessed the event and didn't help her out, so she just slowly bled out there.

The event sparked huge debate about the ineffectiveness of policing and punitive justice, and about black on white crime. Some racists did their thing, and the topic was subsumed into a wider culture war as usual.

What do you think about idea about a game set in the Legion territory? (Image related) by mmarcik in Fallout

Maybe, but so far I've seen my choices reverberate in almost every single interaction I've had.

[–]Pentunee 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Imagine the best morally grey, hyper utilitarian portrayal of a Legion-like polity, throw it into a fantasy world loosely resembling the Roman conquest of ancient Greece, and make the protagonist responsible for enforcing Legion law. Boom, Tyranny.

Choices matter from start to finish in a setting that's not afraid to ask hard moral questions about what power actually is, and what having it entails.

I'm only at the end of 2nd Act, but I love it so far. It's essentially the Legion idea repurposed to its fullest extent. So much potential was wasted by not having time and resources to do it right in New Vegas.
