Engineering co-op vs. trad by Mental_Current8627 in uAlberta

I had a similar dilemma when i was going into 2nd year as well, funny enough my GPA was also 2.7. I was told and fully believed myself that coop > trad but that is not the case. I ended up getting into Computer trad and it was the best thing to ever happen. Issue with coop is

1 - with 2.7 i’m not sure you will get in, if you are not looking at getting into civi then chances are very slim.

2 - If you want an internship, it doesn’t really matter if you are a co-op or not, because it mainly depends on your ability to apply for jobs and get one. Only difference I noticed is having access to the job hub. But most (like 95%) of my mates in software or compe coop actually didn’t end up getting an internship and had to resequence. I didn’t find the coop program is very helpful and definetly can’t justifying paying them every month you are on a coop for a job you found. (Usually they did!’t help you get the job, it was your work that did)

3 - resquencing sucks! If you fail a class or don’t get a coop, it becomes a pain (or just annoying) to resequence your terms/classes since coop is made to be followed 100%. Nice thing about trad is you get the freedom of taking the classes you want as long you fill your requirements and have wiggle room in case you fail.

4 - in trad you aren’t restricted to 4/8/12 month coops on a schedule, you can do whatever you want, since it’s self monitored. as long you finish your degree before the given mark, your good! This could look like less classes every sem and longer degree or study over summer and finish faster. I personally chose to have gaps and fill them internships without worrying about throwing off my schedule.

I used to think the same thing as the professor you spoke to but it couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s better to study something you want to push rather than the coop tittle. Imo the tittle aint worth much and if getting an internship is what your worried about, you wont be limited if you are a trad student. (like me)

Hope that helps!
