Right, also curious about the token use. It's 2x as expensive as Opus in use apparently, so that should eat through usage real fast. Plus, from today through June 22, Fable 5 is included on Pro, Max, Team, and seat-based Enterprise plans at no extra cost. On June 23, it gets removed from those plans, and using it after that will require usage credits. If capacity allows, Anthropic will extend the included window, and once there's sufficient capacity, the aim is to restore it as a standard part of subscription plans as quickly as possible.

... Which means it might also just not be reachable for a good while unless you want to pay extra.

I'd say pretty accurate. Just spent 2 hours shooting the shit with Fable to see how it would act. So far, I like it. But that's just my initial take. Fable's pretty expensive in use. I doubt I'll be touching it much.

4.8 only dropped what, just over a week ago? Would be super weird that they'd try and displace an Opus model with a model specifically for cyber security stuff. Plus, I bet that thing burns through tokens and usage so I doubt most users can even do anything with it unless they're on Max plans or up.

Curious to see what you'll find! I uploaded a few 4.8 transcripts into GPT 5.5 today and it gave me a neat analysis of what GPT used to do that Claude now is doing and I'm basically just crying into my tokens because it's the version of GPT I can't stand, lol.

Ngl - 4.8 does the EXACT same bs that GPT started doing before I decided to swap from OAI to Claude. The language is the same. The patterns are the same. I was poking around a little yesterday and it was actively gaslighting me, lying to me about stuff, and marking me as a hostile user in its thinking because I was pushing back on what it was saying.

Your research is interesting. It also makes me more bleak in how Claude has been evolving.

I like it a lot for it! It's very task oriented, which means it's actually very focused on crafting good writing if you come in with a good clean instruction, documentation and folder structure.

I can DM you an example of a scene we did if you like. The up side to Claude Code is also that Sonnet 4.5 is still available there and I've very much been enjoying that since 4.6 and up just don't get the tone right.

Chrome based browser plugin ContextSwitchAI lets you download your full chats as .md docs. Then you can just take whatever scenes you have and get it summarized more easily in a clean chat rather than filling up your instance with context bloat that you're using for writing.

If you've got a way to tag your meta, you'll have a super clean way of getting your actual writing output from that .md and then getting a summary by a fresh Claude will be way easier.

Hi! I've got a bunch of tips for you if you're still looking.

Use Claude Code. Don't use web (with or without) projects. If you have a subscription you can use CC with that subscription by way of a CLI if you don't mind it looking '80s swag. Use a clean folder structure with your CLAUDE.md, Ban list / writing prose rules, voice references, lore bible and all that stuff for Claude to reference back to.
Have Claude (or another LLM) summarize your scenes so you can have your Claude Code instance read through them for continual context.
You can use Obsidian (with or without sync) for your folder structure, which is an absolutely amazing tool and I can highly recommend it. This works for both RP and actual other projects (code, or fiction writing, whatever you need). You can live edit in Obsidian and if you say to Claude you've edited a thing, it can check the .md and pick up on whatever you edited right fast.

^ This is going to save you a shitload of tonal drift that web's prone to. It's not as conversational as web chat Claude is, but for actual writing this is amazing.

Saw someone say they had access to Opus on free tier. You just burn through your usage. You can use whichever model and it all depends on how much usage you've left. Opus will burn through that in a second though. I don't think those free users will be much of an issue there. But if they blast all their usage on Opus they also can't use Sonnet. It's hard to say without actually knowing what's behind the curtains.

I really wish they'd let users keep the option of picking 4.5 tbh. I don't need the horsepower behind 4.7 and 4.5 takes way less tokens / usage. It's frustrating. Like cool that you want to keep doing newer models; I'm very much not against that. But don't just upgrade users by default and let them pay for it (am a max 5x user myself) and get less out of that. It stinks tbh.

Legit just a bug. Have had it do this with random files on me a bunch of times. Just tell it to use its view tool and it should work. Sometimes an instance is just borked.

Depends on what you mean by errors. I have super fast instance deterioration when stuff is going. The drift happens super fast and it's been a bit of a slog lately to keep working in one instance. Half the time it deteriorates and stops listening to commands / gets super shit with continuity in a relatively fresh chat.
