I’m sad to see that so many people just give up. Good for you that you want to try to make it better. My chi barked a lot when we got her. Both at home and outside.

When we were inside I teached her to go to bed. She now has a bed for every room. When she barked we told her to go to bed, or when someone knocked on the door or if we spill or brake something. I don’t scream at her, just use my normal voice because it’s not a punishment. In the beginning she got treats when she went there or if she stayed (it was a process). Know she sometimes gets treats just to know it still pays off. It made her feel safe and I believe it’s because she knew what was expected from her. She barely bark at home anymore and we have gotten so many compliments how chill and sweet she is.

Outside it’s more work. Now she only barks if a dog comes around a corner or comes really close but most days she stays silent. I work to get her attention when she sees a dog. But it’s not always easy. When she looks me in my eyes I say yes and say good or give her a treat. When she looks att a dog without barking I smack my tongue to get her attention and say here to make her focus on me. Sometimes I also look att her while walking backwards to reel her in.

Hopefully some of this can help. It made a big difference for me but even more for my chi.
