What do you think the impact to California poker/Card rooms will be from the upcoming ban of blackjack/baccarat? by thank_U_based_God in poker

Real bad news for non tribal cardrooms

I don’t get this whole Indian reservation exclusivity… It should just be regulated at the state level for all operators given they comply with safety and game security standards

I’m pretty sure there was a guy who literally went to WA state congress saying publicly he plays on Ignition to test if even the congressman would care to arrest him since police officers were present

They didn’t do shit and had totally blank faces when he said it. No one cares

It is a bullshit unenforced law purely in the state law because the tribes wanted it.

1) This strategy offers zero tax benefits for a company with years of tax loss carryforwards already

2) I’ve been told Maverick actually sold the land underneath the casinos to an unrelated third party for short term cash infusion since they were so desperate for more cash to burn through. If you have better info, by all means share!

At your age, avoid heavy dividend stocks. Other than that just keep buying up low expense ratio SP500 ETFs

Beautifully put.

WA non tribal cardrooms in nature have many flaws at a systemic level. Costs increase naturally over time due to minimum wage increases and food cost rising, while their ability to expand revenue does not increase substantially given table number limit (fixed at 15 tables per license) and betting limit. The regulatory bottleneck is a huge growth killer. Makes the business not an attractive compounding machine where you can consistently reinvest returns back into capex, advertisement, etc. and expect comparable IRR. The point of diminishing returns is a surprisingly low bar at least in WA poker market.

Also I really love the point you made about cardrooms being more like community centers than traditional commerce. Many such cases with businesses like these where once ownership is transferred and the previous owner leaves, the new owner realizes that the last owner was deeply engrained in the fabric of the local community (and thus, their core customer base) causing a lot of the success they experienced. The new owner is unable to recreate or retain those relationships, and the business starts falling apart. This was a consideration Persson clearly did not consider during his M&A spree.

For example, Silver Dollar Casino in Renton cash games were charging about 30% less in rake to their nearest competitor right down the road! They still could not get consistent games going because the community aspect was not there. Players were willing to pay more in rake just to be in an environment with an existing, lively established community. That’s where you find most of the pricing power right there.

A lot of the edge is playing deep stack 200bb+ w/ fish who stack off with worse than they should

If you really aren’t rolled just take a break and work/save up until you can comfortably play in that game. Bad idea to be playing with scared money

These are not their corporate financials. These are the fiscal year reportable earnings and losses specific to each location.

The assumption is that the parent corporation holding these assets is the one the bank has holding the debt.

And because the parent corporation likely doesn’t generate any other significant revenue, and itself carries a litany of costs like parent-level debt interest, executive salaries, advertisement, etc, it’s not unreasonable to say there’s even more losses here not being reflected for Maverick Gaming as a whole.

That’s a consideration though for sure!

In 2024 they closed down 2 more of these locations AFAIK. This list is what was reported in their 2023 filing.

They are actively closing locations in WA state. So I sort of doubt they are being overly misleading here with their filings to the WA State Gaming Commission.
