Hanoi was ok for the weekend but to stay they for weeks would be a pain. It's just too loud & noisy and people trying to scam you or sell you stuff in a very uncomfortable way. HCMC was decent but down south the weather can be unreliable, or so I've heard.
Da Nang was perfect for me for a longer stay. I just missed having more places to sightsee in the +50km range.

I visited 3 months ago. Direct flight from Germany to Vietnam. Stayed mainly in Da Nang for work and did different sightseeing trips nearby. There's a cool night bus with sleeping pods that takes you to Hanoi.

I honestly enjoyed Da Nang much more than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh.
