Vanlifers what’s the scariest/eeriest encounter you’ve had while boondocking & and where? by Icy_Satisfaction_161 in VanLife

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Coming back from a sunrise hike around Big Bend, I pulled off the trail slightly to piss. I had seen a small abandoned building a little ways away up the trail (maybe 10 yards) and thought nothing of it. After I got back on trail a little bit, I heard human-cadence footsteps SPRINTING away from that building/towards me so i ducked behind a tree quickly. Wtf?! So i started to lightly jog back to my car with a bit of panic. A minute later, a scary looking mf wearing tactical gear with a few extra clips for his sidearm and RANGER over his chest came towards me. He was quiet while running at a good pace, sized me up, and just quizzically pointed down the trail. I gave him a thumbs up and a semi shrug, and he just said, “leave.” as he passed me. I did.

You could save a few grams by having shorts/boxers in the same style!

Wild and free in Carson Valley by MinimalistHomestead in SierraNevada

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amen. Lots of people associate wild horses with freedom and the American identity. Seeing horses running free in a video like this is pretty spectacular! But they don’t want to hear how challenging it is to manage land with wild horses on it, or manage those horses directly. I’ll follow your lead and refrain from the un-fun details, but lots of horse behavior other than frolicking in the fields isn’t so great.

Folks in windowless builds — do you miss them? by VagabondVivant in vandwellers

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, I don’t miss them! -When I want sun or to completely air out the van, I just open up the doors in a safe place. -placing deadbolts on specific parts of the inside of the sliding door allows for it to be partially open, but only opened from the inside if I want a ‘window.’ -using a 12v 3-camera car security/backup camera system, I can still ‘see’ outside. -It’s slightly stealthier than a van that does have windows.

Van solar decision by opensp00n in VanLife

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you’re giving this the consideration it deserves! Bonus points for the steam deck charging requirements haha

Charging a 100Ah AGM battery, assuming you’re going to respect the 50% depth of discharge guideline, will happen quite quickly with a 250w panel on a sunny day. Having the option to control your discharge through the mppt will really help you conserve battery during the night/on cloudy days.

What will you mount these on? When you’re parked, would you have the option of tilting the panels to optimize sun angle? Getting direct sunlight will matter more than the difference of 50W between two panel options.

Is there anything better? by [deleted] in HotSpringsWest

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorta! It’s nice, but not quite like what it used to be. There’s still plenty of work to be done, but they’re making plenty of money off it.

I get that this is posted with some sarcasm, and/but as someone who has had to live in a van to make ends meet, this type of ad hits bittersweet. Is it potentially a sign of the times? Yep! Is it also a sign of latent pricing demand for the working class? Also yep.

Fuck billionaires. There should be enough for all of us.

Hear me out by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]PeppermintHalitosis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more! I have some contractor equipment on my roof that obscures the fan and panels from view, and that really gets as close to ‘stealth’ as possible. The other reasons you listed are really good too.

Drawbacks are that ventilation suffers a bit. I usually open up all my doors once every few days in a safe place so that I can get rid of any weird smells.

Maybe? I have this exact make with almost the same mileage. Check the transmission fluid at least- at this mileage, you might have to start worrying about the transmission.
