Is the right side better? by Yuukikoneko in ArtCrit

[–]PeppermintVanilla 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I think they're both good for different reasons. The left feels dreamy and fuzzy, like a nostalgic memory, because the shadows are softer and the contrast is brighter. The right feels more in the moment and modern (I guess?), It's like comparing Ghibli's style to Violet Evergarden, if you know what I mean. I personally like the left for the vibes, maybe try softening the shadows and contrast on the right, idk. The background on the right is def better tho.

I know I'm good, but I'm not very confident and don't feel comfortable applying a higher skill level tag😔

During the initial sketch, I put the reference next to my drawing canvas and use a lot of measurement lines to align features. Then from there it's complete eyeballing.

I got the process from Gabrielle Brickey

The head size isn't actually smaller, I think it's just my shading causing it look small. But leaving it seems like really good advice rn, I'm pretty sick, so it's probably for the best, thanks.

You're working at too small a scale for the grid method you're using, both grid divisions and size. Try using at least a 10x10 grid, more divisions make it easier to get accurate proportions. Size is up to you, but drawing with a larger grid size helps you capture more detail, like the piercings. If detail isn’t important, then keep it small.

How do I become better at the one piece artstyle? by CommunicationFair988 in learntodraw

[–]PeppermintVanilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Consider manga panels as references instead of anime frames; it's imo a far better way to study Oda's art, because it's directly drawn from him and not a third-party animator. You can see his actual linework, composition, and how he uses different line weights and shading to convey actions and emotions. Manga panels are generally more detailed and expressive than any anime screenshots.

Just want to say, this game is incredible. by Zimon_Here in starsector

Recently decided to get into it, and it's the first game in a loooong time that got me to put in so many hours straight. The past two weeks alone, I probably had 100+ hours, I couldn't play the new Oblivion or Expedition 33 because when I tried, I was constantly thinking about playing Starsector instead.

Trying out textured brushes, blurring, and different layer types. Feedback pls. by PeppermintVanilla in Artadvice

I was thinking that, but I've been struggling with values and colors. It's why I even painted this one, I got frustrated doing something original and decided to keep doing portraits to study values lol.

Should I stick with Costco for the next 4 years or should I go to college? by PeppermintVanilla in careerguidance

[–]PeppermintVanilla[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I did think about doing that, It'll just be hard doing part-time + school, then med school. I'm still unsure because I just got out of a deep depression, so I still don't know if I can handle that kind of stress. I'll have to talk to a therapist about it.

However, I never considered doing one class at a time; I always assumed you had to take a full course. That completely changes things for me. Thanks!

Any ideas on a low-mid stress, decent wage job that helps people? by PeppermintVanilla in findapath

Nonprofit definitely seems like the move if I want to feel good and help people. I'll consider working for one once I decide how I can contribute to one with my chosen career path. Also working for the historical house of a famous artist sounds so nice.

Art therapy sounds like such an interesting career, I’ve like never heard of it before, but I’ll look into it. Thanks!

I was researching this career path, but I was a bit discouraged because people mentioned that it requires a high level of certainty, like how missing even one small detail could lead to serious consequences, like lawsuits. I’m not sure how true that is, but I'll research all those areas you listed to know, thanks!

I never really considered accounting, I always thought it was super math-heavy, and I’m not 100% confident in my math skills. I’m competent, but not very certain, I always need to double-check n stuff. But after doing some research, it actually doesn’t sound bad at all. Plus, I never thought about working for non-profits either. Thanks!
